On modern versions of macOS, you simply can’t power on your computer, launch a text editor or eBook reader, and write or read, without a log of your activity being transmitted and stored.somehow i suspect the apple fanboys are too stockholmed to carehttps://sneak.berlin/20201112/your-computer-isnt-yours/

@velartrill Hot take: Blender for anything besides 3D modeling is literally useless. People who talk about using it for video editing or 3D design with precise measurements are in such an intense state of cope.

@velartrill @kaikatsu I'm pretty sure Wine has issues with most newer Autodesk software, and "compatible" CAD are all proprietary and in bed with them, it's really fucked (there's a reason "free DWG format reader" has been at the top of Stallman's priority list since forever)

@kaikatsu @allison > not usable in WINE without tens of hours of troubleshooting.uh there is a very big difference between "not usable" and "it takes work to make it usable"personally i'm willing to invest a bit of time into avoiding being assraped by microsoft &c, and saving myself the effort of maintaining a massive spyware install on my own system, but you do you i guess

@velartrill @allison Tens of hours of debugging random shit just to get it booted is unusable. Expecting anybody to do that work every time they need to install it is nonsense. And then even after this, it is only booting and not optimized in the slightest. You have to understand that not everybody wants to play with this shit all day. I have work to do, and I can get that done with an isolated Windows install quickly. I don't care about the spyware bit because otherwise *I don't get paid*

@461 @kaikatsu @velartrill it's only partially a marketability problem. Current Linux desktop offerings can't really compete with commercial offerings (though Windows is getting close thanks to Microsoft's complete disregard for UX or system stability in Windows 10). Linux has to actually be competitive as an actual desktop machine before marketing will be a major factor and it's not.

@animeirl I'm reading https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Infos/JobsWhile I decide if I should buy one of their prebuilds thanks to another thread.I'm not a fan of using the state to strong arm the competition away with lawsuits and IP C&D, so your argument is pretty dull. I'm still waiting on blackberry to release their QMX source code so _we can talk_ about competition.@kaikatsu @velartrill

@animeirl @velartrill ... It doesn't?running xubuntu on a 15 year old 32 bit lenovo. still to this day have had very lil to no issues with it.its able to start and load programs/webpages faster than some of my friends newer apple products.the major disadvantage of linux is the installation process isnt necessarily user friendly enough for most people to accomplish, making it difficult to switch over. as well as the program availability (like mentioned earlier post)

@animeirl @velartrill couldn't discuss something that complex in a single toot >.<if the time was given, could find just as many examples, if not more, of why other OS's suck.linux gives you total control over your devices, and its powerful because its designed so simplistically. the more people that start using it, than more people will improve its opensource code, and most, if not all of these lil issues will be corrected, and the platform will grow more user friendly.

@staticbrat @animeirl @velartrill Good reason to support companies like System76 or Purism. That's just off the top of my head, but there's plenty more! The thing that makes Linux hard to install (to a greater or lesser extent depending on the system) is that you have to install it. For most people the OS comes preinstalled on the computers they buy, and it should be the same for us!Besides, less chance of hardware driver issues...

@alcinnz @staticbrat @animeirl @velartrill As a complete computer idiot I bought a new laptop from Tuxedo computers. The box arrived, I hit the power button, typed a password, and then the thing just worked. Even my evil HP printer worked immediately. The OS is an Ubuntu version customized by Tuxedo computers. I don’t really understand much more than with a Windows or a Mac, but it simply works. Preinstalled Linux is real and easy.

@hansup @alcinnz @staticbrat @velartrill providing random anecdotes doesn't really mean much. The simple fact is existing desktop environments have far more bugs or poorly designed behavior than the competition. It is possible to fix or at least work around most of them, but that's kind of the problem. When I use a computer it's because I have something I want to work on, I don't want another parallel project of babysitting Linux. If someone put a gun to my head and forced me to do everything I do now on Linux, could I? With the exception of a few games, yes. Would I want to in any other circumstances? Hell no.

@velartrill @alcinnz @hansup ya, if linux was preinstalled more people would use it just like that. too bad microsoft bribes almost every computer company out there to have windows as the defualt, along with all of its bloatware, people don't seem realize this causes the computer to cost a lot more too.@animeirl honestly, first person talking with that has ran into soo many issues with linux

@animeirl @velartrill @alcinnz @hansup if your talking about the layout, dont see how that is an issue either, usually recommend ubuntu for first time linux users, you show them the search, app store, files and browser and they pretty much figure everything else out themselves pretty easily.ease of interaction just seems to depend on what people are familiar with, luckly with linux there is several flavors and customizations.

@staticbrat @animeirl @hansup @velartrill Seriously, we need some "honesty signalling" marketting to help people get over their pre-conceived notions that Linux is hard to use and buggy! Hopefully that'd cut past everyone who loves system administration, and insists others do likewise. My anecdotes suggest that Mac & Windows are the buggy ones. Which people cope with by calling someone they've labelled "good at computers".

@alcinnz @staticbrat @animeirl @hansup @velartrill Linux *is* hard to use, even after 15+ years of using exclusively UNIces. I've never had a hardware with Linux preinstalled which "just worked". But I'm valuing the very possibility to dig deep into the dirt more. If you ever wondered why some people who should have an experience still hate computers, that's why.
