I think people are drawn to conspiracy theories that explain everything neatly as nefarious actions of a select malignant few that control everything because facing that we are actually under the control of idiots who don’t know what they’re doing, and most of everything that happens to humans is just chaos caused by incompetence and shortsightedness, is much more terrifying. If the bad things that happen are part of someone’s plan, then we can defeat that someone and stop their plan. If it’s all just random idiocy and there’s no tangible enemy, we are truly fucked.Being ruled by hypercompetent reptilian aliens isn’t half as scary as being ruled by utterly incompetent bald apes.

@Wildebeest Nah, what is worse is that we are ruled by people who are nowhere near as smart as they think they are. 😬 Look at the practice of JIT (Just In Time) inventory replacement for large stores —- when everything is working right, it is a great system. Stores don’t have to keep huge amounts of back-stock because they get trucks of new stuff every night. When something goes wrong, like 9/11 or Covid, the system breaks down fast and stores run out of items quickly which leads to panic buying. When people keep 2-4 weeks worth of food and water in their home and a back-up source of power (if at all possible), they have a chance of coming through emergencies in better shape. The big stores and distribution centers don’t plan for that, as far as I know.

@shrikefliesfree That’s exactly what I mean though, right? The system is fragile and not designed intelligently to deal with emergencies. There’s chaos because nobody really knows what to do, not because there’s a villain pulling the strings. And that is a much scarier thing to contend with.

@shrikefliesfree @Wildebeest You both make good points. Many people do want to believe someone smart is in charge, yet there is much evidence of stupidity. Here is an example of a smarter approach. H-E-B is a supermarket chain in Texas with a full-time director of emergency preparedness. They were already paying attention to the corona virus by the second week in January. https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/heb-prepared-coronavirus-pandemic
