Free software as described by GNU.org, "The four essential freedoms. A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this." https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html"How do I use the term 'open source'? The phrase 'open source' standing by itself is a mass noun. In compounds that use the phrase as an adjectival noun, such as "open-source software," follow normal English usage and hyphenate."While there is agreement on the broad term 'open source' as meaning approximately what is captured in the Open Source Definition the term has, ironically, now become so popular that it has lost some of its precision. We strongly encourage everyone who cares about open software to use the term only to describe licenses that conform to the OSD, or software distributed under such licenses; but since the term has passed into more general use, we also encourage people to refer to the "OSI Certified" mark, which has precision and legal force in identifying software distributed under licenses that are known to meet the OSD requirements." https://web.archive.org/web/20021217003716/http://www.opensource.org/advocacy/faq.htmlFind me on Mastodon: https://linuxrocks.online/@ChrisWereTwitch: https://twitch.tv/ChrisWerePatreon: https://patreon.com/ChrisWerePayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=HUHGK8R4EBBCEWebsite: https://ChrisWere.neocities.orgEmail: contact-chris@posteo.net

I tend to be more of a "ends justify the means" kind of person when it comes to terminology. If you have to break a term down in a way that is not going to be 100% accurate but it gets the person in question to consider using GIMP over Photoshop; Linux over Windows; VLC over Windows Media Player; Firefox over Edge; etc then I will never get mad about the use of the term because we now have one more person using free or open source software. If you tried to be more accurate but it goes over their head and they just shrug it off then what benefit has been done ? The way I see terms myself is free software gives you more freedom in terms of what you can do with the software where open source software lets you view the source code but may not allow you much more than that. The best way I have heard it put is "all free software is open source but not all open source software is free".
