Wife needs a US IP for a transaction. Is there an easy way to do this from out of country? I've never done this and have no idea what's involved. This is not like Tor right?@amolith

@zudn The easiest way is probably to use a VPN. I personally like Mullvad but I assume this is a one-time thing so ProtonVPN might serve you better as they have a free tier.https://protonvpn.com

@amolith Thanks. I read about VPN, but didn't understand much. Something to be downloaded? I see it offers servers in three countries. I don't suppose you know which those are, or if the user chooses?

@zudn A VPN basically routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel over the internet to the VPN server. From there, your requests go to whatever website or destination you've chosen but that destination thinks you're coming from the VPN's location. So if you choose a server in the US, it'll appear as if you reside in the US. Depending on the company she's placing the transaction with, a VPN may or may not be blocked. It's becoming more common but still pretty unlikely. If I remember correctly, ProtonVPN has a native linux client that you would download. From there, you could pick which server you want to connect to. If they don't have a native client, I do know they have documentation for setting that connection up on any platform.Keep in mind that a VPN isn't necessarily "private". You're just trading one ISP for another so it's important to choose one that you trust. Free VPNs are typically a big no but I do think ProtonVPN is at least marginally trustworthy. The other ones just collect and sell all your data 🤮

@amolith OK; thanks for that info. I've sent the link to the wife. It is a one-time thing.

@zudnTry Proton VPN on her phone with free app. Or Tunnelbear via free browser extension on laptop. Pick the free US server and check if it is a US IP by visiting a what is my IP website.Don't use Tor because it randomly picks servers in different countries.

@zudn @amolith If you have a Linux box on the client side, it's simple and affordable and Tor isn't required. It's how I do my own web browsing and email. If you just need to switch a browser's IP address, "ssh" plus a VPS is sufficient. Note: VPS, not VPN. A low-end VPS costs as little as $2 to $4 USD per month.Or you can switch the IP address for all TCP traffic (not just the browser). To do this, use "sshuttle" plus the same VPS.I'm out of room, but I'll post details on request.

@zudn @amolith 1) If you have a Linux PC at home, I could try to talk you through this regardless.2) I don't recommend using an open proxy. They're run by phishers.3) A commercial proxy might work but I don't know of one that I can recommend.4) Do you have a tech friend or college student relative who has a Linux VPS? If so, you're in like Flynn.5) Last resort, I could let you use one of my Squid instances for a day but you should really do this with somebody that you know personally.
