The social dilemma is a documentary that's equally interesting as depressing. It's something I recommend everyone to watch if you have access to Netflix.* https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Dilemma* https://imdb.com/title/tt11464826/* https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224#SocialMedia #MentalHealth

@hund no hard feelings against netflix in particular, but more against media streaming services in general. It teaches people quantity over quality. It promotes, that abundance is better than having only what you really need/like. It won't give you the ownership to what you bought. It won't promise you that you'll have it forever even if you won't stop paying... and my personal problem would also be how much time I would spend on it :)

@marian_mizik I've done a lot of thinking about it as well. I used to be against services like Netflix, not that I'm all for them either, but I think they're alright for what they are. I think it should be seen as a rental service. Just the way you went to the video store and rented movies on VHS cassettes. It's a good complement to buying the physical copy. Both have their pros and cons.I have never had TV-channels at home. I think it's a waste of time and you need to watch things on […]

@hund no streaming/cloud service says that its like rental. they tell you the opposite. For example netflix says: You can watch as much as you want, whenever you want. People are mostly unaware. They are creating their own playlists and libraries on netflix or spotify, without ability to migrate, or any promise they will be allowed to use it in a week or month. Look at Adobe and how they migrated everybody to cloud and then completely blocked venezuela. even with no refund.

@marian_mizik If anyone thinks that they're guaranteed to have access to whatevers currently available it's on them. They don't advertise that some material is only there for a limited time, but it's public information and not a secret that Netflix rent some of the content. That's why they like to produce their own content so they can keep it forever. And in general, if you don't own it, you don't control it. It anyone things otherwise it's in them.

@hundI started watching it last night, it basically confirms what we already know. I am not sure you can put the genie 🧞♂️ back in the bottle 🍾

@hund finished watching it today. It was a bit meh tbh. I definitely agree with the idea that corporate social media is broken. But I didn't need a bunch of silicon valley guys to tell me that. I don't think they should even have a say in how to fix the problem, given how they all profited immensely out if creating it. Also, not once were alternatives or user freedom discussed.

@nezhac They're probably not even aware of things like Mastodon. If they cared about ethnics to begin with they wouldn't have chosen the path they took. It's not like they didn't know what they where doing.
