@Gina that's a cute size! But I don't think you can call a USB stick an SSD...

@moiety lol I got this laptop from my very first real job like 7 years ago, it was amazing back then. πI'm saving up for something new, but haven't decided yet on a desktop or laptop. For now, this will have to do.

@Gina I'm "stuck" with a 512GB SSD without HDD. It's enough so far, and my whole system is buttery smooth.

@Gina @moiety Back in February I bought a 2TB NVMe drive for less than $300. Now it's even cheaper and faster:https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Rocket-Internal-Performance-SB-RKTQ-2TB/dp/B0829DZH2W/

@Gina 20GB ssd!? #timemachine Are you going to replace both with larger ssds? Or just stick to the current hardware?

@ajmartinez I can't even find the current SSD on my motherboard (how am I even a sysadmin π), so I just swapped out the hdd for a newer ssd I found a few days ago. Now cloning to the new ssd.

@Gina @ajmartinez well now i'm curious how that SSD could be hidden. is it inside that bay where the DVD drive usually goes? that's where I put my second SSD in my ThinkPad.

@Gina it's that SanDisk branded square right in the middle of the main board, next (and similar) to the WiFi card. You might even find an upgrade that will fit.

@Gina Nice! Years ago (10 maybe?) I started configuring my work-provided laptop with the cheapest HDD and lowest RAM possible (spending my budget on harder to replace components like processor and screen), and upon receipt would immediately swap in the biggest SSD and as much RAM as I could afford. It's been all ThinkPads here, fortunately, so easy hardware swaps and great Linux compatibility.

@Gina looks like itβs in the middle of the board (Sandisk thing next to the WiFi module). If you search for that part number you will probably see your options for upgrading. Hope the cloning went well in any case!

@Gina I built a Linux PC with AMD hardware earlier this year, after spending 4 years on a laptop. I still have the laptop and it's great for couch coding, but man, now I can actually play some games that collected dust in my Steam library.

@grainloom @Gina @ajmartinez On my laptop I discovered that the SSD was one of those fancy new things that don't even try to look like a spinning disk in a box, it was just a memory stick on a special socket on the motherboard under the keyboard.
