imagine if likedevices advertised their drivers automatically in a sort of standard bytecode formatand OS's, bootloaders, firmware, would just have to interpret (or compile and run) the bytecode to have support for this device

iirc ACPI and OpenFirmware kinda do thiswould be great if this extended to PC interfaces

@tuxcrafting that would be good but imagine vendors actually doing that also Free software firmware would be dead

@tuxcrafting So like f-code on Open Firmware? IIRC EFI originally was planned to have similar facilities but no one was interested

@Meeper this, and phoning home, would only be a problem with a very limited subset of devices, for which replacement driver bytecode could be made by the community if necessary

@tuxcrafting within a 100% ethical world, this would be great. In the real world, this is probably the worst nightmare in software injection vulnerabilities and general infosec...Not to say it would continue encouraging nonfree drivers as nobody would be particularly required to release the source (in case of the bytecode version).(sorry if I bust the bubble)

@kzimmermann then people could write free software drivers to act as replacementthe point is mostly universal drivers (not bound to any OS API)

@tuxcrafting I see, I guess if there could be an easy way to reverse engineer them, this would be a good idea. I'd just fear somebody silently masking malware behind a "poorly coded driver" for that USB coffee maker they're selling.

@kzimmermann drivers could be sandboxed. after all they don't need any access other than access to the target hardware, and traps for APIs
