sometimes i look at the list of stuff i want less of in my feed and my notices...- political arguments- technical arguments- unsolicited advice- anime girls...and i wonder why i'm on here at all.

@thor I guess you could also talk about since science, math or philosophy and find people here.I am here because I was dead tired from the brain-dead arguments on other platforms and of course that I can have also real private conversations if I want to. That is hardly possible on big social networks, who make money out of it.

@thor fedi seems to be something else rather than replacement of social networks for normal people. It is more of an assembly of the people who were rejected by it or decided to reject it themselves.

@ybaumy i sometimes do talk about those things and also tech, and i touch upon political subjects, but not in a very detailed way most of the time... which doesn't prevent other people from getting very detailed and nitty gritty in response due to their obsessions and pet peeves about those subjects.

@whiteout i'm also in a quantum state between nerd and artist, so sometimes, my definition of normie is rather fluid and changes depending on context.

@thor If you are not prepared to talk about politics than better do not touch the subject at all, which is really hard because politics is pretty much everything, even if you are talking about tech for example. Safest way is to only post cat and dog pics^^

@ybaumy you can't talk about the weather without it being political, as i sarcastically remarked earlier. but i want to talk still. what i do when people start arguing like that is, if i manage to remember to, i mute that thread.

@whiteout interesting but fundamentally dissatisfying in some respects because the level of engagement you often get is rather superficial. it's not an ideal place for making friends, because there is no shared activity to bond over.

@whiteout in every case where i've made friends online in the past, there has been a centre of gravity, some activity people gather to participate in, and direct interactions naturally result from this.

@thor There will be always people who do not agree with you and that is fine and it has to be like that. Thing is .. radical dogmatic people. That goes in every direction and makes analyzing situations really hard and discussions unbearable.

@ybaumy well, yes, disagreeing is a thing, but when i look at myself, the general trend has been that i've become less and less interested in convincing others of my opinion with age, and also, less and less interested in defending these opinions when they are attacked. i think young adults especially *love* to get into such arguments, plus older people who have some kind of obsession with it.

@ybaumy in most cases where i accidentally end up in such arguments, they have this mountain of information they've gathered that they want to throw my way, and i'm just not interested.

@thor Convincing pretty much never works and is also a really problematic situation, since it may involve manipulating somebody in thinking your way and agreeing with your positions. That touches the boundaries of individual freedom and personal development and is like I said a narrow path to walk on.Wisdom and experience comes not from other peoples convictions, but is founded on direct action and knowledge.

@ybaumy yeah i mean i've realised long ago that people don't have opinions due to pure logic, since the most insane things can be argued based on logic alone. people have opinions because they care, and caring is fundamentally about emotion, about what you feel about stuff. emotions have their own logic, but as you point out, they're based more on what you've seen and experienced than cold dry facts.

@thor That lack of tact is use of force and violating other peoples freedom of choice.

@thor Acceptance plays also a role in that. Education and upbringing of children which should foster individuality and freedom may not bring the desired "results", which can be seen in many families. When arguing with someone you can accept that he is how he is and maybe choose not to talk to him because that is your own personal freedom of choice.
