@Gina @x Banking apps is really my biggest problem leaving iOS, or rather BankID which is quickly taking over online identification in Sweden. It's very difficult without it.

@bjonte @Gina @x But isn't e Foundation using a modified version of Android called /e/? If so, wouldn't all applications that work with stock Android work with e Foundation?

@Gina @x Try to move your contacts or work to Telegram for better security and privacy. Before I deleted my Facebook account in early 2019, I only had 1 or 2 friends on Telegram. Today, I have over 40, both new and old friends.

@Gina @edgren @x This is beyond my knowledge, but isn't there a problem that from the app's view the phone looks rooted unless running Android from Google? I'd guess the banking apps would refuse to run if that was the case.

@Gina You can use Aurora Store to get WhatsApp and this kind of "Propietary shit people can't leave without" software as a service.Bad thing is... it violates one of the Google Play usage conditions, but who cares?? Google violates every peoples privacy which is way worse

@Gina @x The reason some apps may not work with a de-googled phone. Android is open-source, but Google includes by default a few non-open system apps. These apps can be used by other apps on your phone for things like: getting accurate fast location (GPS) data, sending (push) messages via Googles servers, and a few other things. When I tried this around 4 years ago there were a few apps that didn't work because they needed this "layer" like Pokรฉmon go, Snapchat and Signal.

@bjonte @Gina @x Hm. Yeah. That would be true, yes. I have 4 banking apps that I can't live without + BankID. I will root my old phone some day (have said that to myself for maybe 4 month now, haha), but not install a custom ROM. Will try them out after that. Hopefully they will work.

@Gina You can degoogle a phone. Can you degoogle a car? If doing so means the car firmware changes, is it still road-legal without the spyware?

@Gina TBH I think traditional manufacturers may beat them to it. It's already a felony to service cars in the US if it involves bypassing DRM, and a locked bootloader could easily be called "DRM". Tesla even remote-destroy a car if they think you've serviced it without their consent. Google won't have to work hard unless we get "Right to Repair".But even then, "road legal" will still be open: what if they disable more than spyware, e.g. emissions controls?https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/09/auto-car-emissions-defeat-devices-delete-kits

@Gina @x Don't know about e Foundation, but I have WhatsApp running on my non-google LineageOS. I just don't receive push notifications (by extension also WA calls), bc missing GP Services. You can try to extract the apk of many apps (or get it from some apk mirror) and install it manually. Spotify crashes and so does my banking app, but I could leave these two apps behind.

@edgren @Gina @bjonte @x I wouldn't be so certain of that if I were you.Certain (/most?) banking apps use the Android API to verify whether you're using 'genuine' (pure) Android (attestation iirc). A phone with a custom ROM or a rooted one will fail that check and subsequently the banking app won't run. 'For your and their safety ofc'.It's mostly BS, but that doesn't matter

@edgren @Gina @bjonte @x There is a reasonable chance it works today, but one should have a backup plan for when it no longer does.I've had a banking app fail bc it was rooted (IIRC they confirmed that to me on the phone), but they apparently disabled that check since. Likely too many failures.#Android will likely attract more and more malware and thus the screws will be tightened over time. https://x0f.org/@FreePietje/104489173811185521
