Watched "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix yesterday. If you're going to watch it, and you should DON'T take what some of the contributors say as 'Gospel' just because they created things or held high posts or look and sound like RMS used to sound LOL, it doesn't necessarily make them right. For example some of Tristan Harris's arguments are flawed IMO I screamed at the TV screen "You could use a bicycle to take you to murder someone! So bikes are not harmless."

@dick_turpin so... hmm... the solution to the social dilemma is to ride a bicycle to a murder... interesting concept... Honey where did you put my balaclava?

@whistlewright Na, He says that bicycles changed society but for the good because they're harmless. Obviously he for how the Wehrmacht and the Japanese used them.

@dick_turpin I haven't seen the video in question so this may be way off topic, but back when I was a fulltime cyclist a group called "Bikes not Bombs" was doing all sorts of good works in the underdeveloped world by sending them used bicycles. Or at least they said they were. I never verified....

@dick_turpin Evidently, the recipents of these used bikes boosted the economies of villages by starting freight hauling companies and taxi services all using bikes. There's was a neat story if it was true.

@whistlewright It's all about Ethical coding and how the likes of Google, Facebook etc are manipulating everyone. I'm not totally convinced because the scenario that was being put forward would mean each and every one of us on the planet basically has their own computer on the Google farm and in the bowels of Menlo Park (Facebook) with our own AI's controlling each of us like something out of The Matrix.

@whistlewright I do agree with some of it though like the fact Google for example will show you news very different to what it shows me. I found myself nodding like a loon when one guy said: "So you look around and cannot understand why people are not reading the things you're reading."

@whistlewright The view was that it was creating Tribalism which I kinda agree with but tbh I don't think that's AI's fault or Social Engineering I think it's more base survival instinct in that people are no longer willing to hear views of ideas that their Tribe does not agree with. It's got to the stage whereby anything said by someone from an opposite camp is wrong and liar simply by virtue of being from another camp. #LeSigh

@whistlewright Exactly! So what the program was saying was that if we have some common interests the AI will enhance that relationship by giving us both positive experiences and bring both of us around to views that maybe we didn't hold a year ago or before we started interacting while all the time shielding us from information we would disagree with. Thing is, that would only be plausible if there was some mystical group controlling everything. #ConspiracyTheory

@wyliecoyoteuk I got what he meant but my point was "Nothing is blameless, everything can be used for nefarious purposes."Clearly I'm immoral because on the whole I think Cambridge Analytica's biggest crime was allowing themselves to be the fall guy. For me, what they were doing (On the whole) seems legitimate. What others did with their systems and data is where the problem lies. Good god, even your supermarket profiles you.

@dick_turpin Here's a question for you.Your party tries to introduce a law that is from your viewpoint, really bad for the country and your constituents. It is a 3 line whip.Do youa vote for it because otherwise your career will be finished.b vote against it because you cannot compromise your beliefs for the sake of your career.c abstain because you are a craven cowardd vote for it, despite knowing it a disaster, but you will be seen as an enemy of the people.I know who I would vote for

@wyliecoyoteuk Sometimes folks pursue "Conscience" and ethics in areas where it has no place to be. It always makes me smile when these people, having earned a fat wage for X amount of yrs and stashed a few quid away suddenly develop a 'Moral Conscience' they had no such 'morals' when they were penniless and desperate to get their code recognised. I know a couple of people who would've sold a kidney to work for Google, having done so after a few years left they started the famous "Ethics" label

@wyliecoyoteuk So I wouldn't say abstaining is "Cowardice" that label is only attached by an individual hoping for an outcome that pleases them alone. So I would say:1. Abstain as a way of showing disagreement.2. Vote for it for the sake of party unity. All political parties have Whips in the UK the only difference is only one party asks the Unions to harass it's members to vote a certain way.

@dick_turpin There is a crapton of thoughts in this one reply of yours and I am not sure how to intelligently reply. My knee jerk is to say "yeah, a faux-conspiracy like Facebook and Google taking over the world kind of conspiracy..." But there is a lot of deep stuff here, bud. I wasn't really counting on thinking too hard on this convo but I think I scared myself somewhere on the way
