It was a bet Edison made with Wallace that got us the incandescent bulb. And IT is pretty much gone today with LCD lights. The Making of America: Thomas Edison - TIMEEdison perfected the incandescent bulb and devised a system of electrical current to serve homes and businesses. Then came the hard parthttp://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1999143_1999202_1999203,00.html

@randynose Unfortunately the reputation of Edison is forever tainted by the way he thwarted and discredited Tesla during his career. He went as far as having an electrical device developed based on AC (a Tesla invention) and electrocuted dogs and horses to demonstrate how dangerous AC was.http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/dept/Courses/E-24/E-24Projects/MariaChang/The_War_of_Currents/The_War_of_Currents.htm

@ericbuijs @randynose Didn't he also try to electrocute a convict with a death sentence?

@ericbuijs @randynose Also, Edison didn't really invent many of the patents to which he's credited. He paid others to do the work, bought ideas, stoles ideas and also just tried stuff until something worked. The proverbial throw shit on the wall and see what sticks. Tesla couldn't deal with that approach because he thought every invention through.

@ericbuijsAs a kid, I had more respect for him. As I learned more, it would seem he gobbled up many ideas if he thought he could make something work.

@oranje From what I've read Edison proposed to use AC for the electrical chair and Edison Electric did assist in the design of the electrical chair. I'm sure Edison didn't participate in executions of any convict (which is a State business after all).@randynose

@ericbuijs @randynose I need to look it up but, as I remember, he was going to execute a convict with AC as a public demonstration to show the dangers of AC.

@ericbuijs @randynose Actually, Edison employed a man named Brown who did all the killing. He electrocuted countless dogs, a horse, assisted a park in killing an elephant and the state of New York in killing a convict. While Brown did all the work, procuring Westinghouse equipment and testing, it later came out that Edison was footing the bill and providing the space. This furthers the notion that he did little real work himself and employed underlings.
