Can any Americans provide a complete idiot’s guide your upcoming election and the implications for women? Are you happy to discuss who you will vote for? What informed your choice? What do you predict will happen?

@Ladyfat I am voting for Biden/Harris. It’s not even a question in my mind. And yes, I know both are abysmal on women’s rights.Biden/Harris are emphatically on the gender crazy train, and Harris has also been emphatic about being pro-sex industry in her primary campaign. Democrats have always treated Biden with suspicion, because he has been pro-corporate throughout his career. If the past is any predictor of the future, this team will deliver symbolic moves on the popular issue du jour and completely ignore abuses of tech companies and income inequality. I’m also not confident that Biden can address immigration issues competently, a major failing of the Obama administration. That’s the bad news. The worse news: Trump has been catastrophic on environmental issues, and even a Democratic Congress can’t rein him in much longer. A lame duck Trump would be devastating for the environment. Trump has a longstanding extreme racism toward Native Americans, from back in his casino days, and that partially drives his support for polluters. And of course Trump has been bad in many other ways, too many to list. For example, his handling of protests over racist police brutality. Not sure Biden could solve corruption of law enforcement, but he couldn’t inflame the issue more if he tried. Then of course there’s the Supreme Court. The good news: Biden is unlikely to serve 8 years, even if re-elected, and Harris is an unknown equation. So far, she’s been a panderer, going from tough-on-crime prosecutor to friend of the pimps. Nobody trusts her. That means she may surprise us.

@hearthmoonGood point about the horrors of a lame duck Trump. Maybe Biden/Harris will be so busy rearranging all the political appointees that they'll get very little else done and we'll hit the bottom of the Great Marxist Bungee Jump just shy of a new Cultural Revolution, zooming away towards sanity while AOC and her squad watch the left's hasty retreat toward the center. @Ladyfat

@Ladyfat I might not agree with Democrats on everything, but the Trump Administration has done a lot to restrict reproductive freedom. I think the implications for women are terrible if he is elected again.https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/tracking-trump/player/donald-trumpBesides all of the “smaller” ways they’ve chipped away at abortion rights, more conservative Supreme Court justices could eventually lead to abortion being illegal. Some states in the US already have a staggeringly low number of abortion clinics available. Texas has a population of 29 million people and only has 22 abortion clinics. 22.Obviously I have more views and opinions, but reproductive freedom is pretty damn important.

@ellewinter thank you. 22 for 29 million people is shocking. Is cheap effected contraception available in such states it is that similarly limited?

@Ladyfat The price without insurance definitely varies. However, the Supreme Court has also upheld decisions (brought by the Trump administration and religious groups) that allow birth control to not be covered by insurance.“Women’s health advocates decried the decision as yet another chipping away at reproductive rights. “Contraception should not be singled out from the rest of health insurance coverage,” Lourdes Rivera, senior vice president of U.S. programs at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement. “Today’s ruling has given bosses the power to dictate how their employees can and cannot use their health insurance — allowing them to intrude into their employees’ private decisions based on whatever personal beliefs their employers happen to hold.””https://theintercept.com/2020/07/09/supreme-court-aca-birth-control-mandate/

@Ladyfat For the good of the country and the whole world we need Trump out of office. Biden has pandered to TRAs, so he’s not going to be great for women either, but I hope he will be a one term president since he is so old.

@MandyJane @Ladyfat If he drops dead before the election, does Harris automatically become the presidential candidate?

@AnneBevan @Ladyfat My mom ask me the same question the other day! 😆 I only know that if he wins the election, but dies before the inauguration, then the vice president elect becomes president. I don’t know what happens if he dies before the election. I think the DNC nominates a new candidate, most likely it would be Kamala Harris, but others could be considered.

@Ladyfat It’s hard for some of us to side with Democrats because they are steeped in transgender ideology. I get it.Personally, I am much more concerned about having a dangerous, incompetent sociopath in the White House for four more years. Do I want men in women’s restrooms, shelters, etc.? No, but I think it’s important not to be a single issue voter this year. Completely incompetent leadership that happens to be “gender critical” (or, really, just anti-trans) is something that makes me cringe as a gender critical feminist. When my country ends up in absolute ruins, it’s not going to comfort me one bit to say, “At least he was anti-trans.” In fact, I will find it all the more embarrassing that this was the case.Dems bring with them a strongly pro-choice platform and a female vice president, which are both good, but they are not the basis of my vote. I am voting because Donald Trump is a danger to my country and, especially because he has threatened to stay in office despite the will of the American people, I feel strongly that EVERY vote is needed. If voters oppose him in overwhelming numbers, his efforts are less likely to lead to an actual victory. For those who dislike Biden, the great news is that he will leave when voted out, and overwhelming numbers may not be needed in 2024, when we will have a more normal election. I know not everyone believes in the American system of government, but I do, and I am voting to preserve it.

@Ladyfat I think the popular vote, if counted accurately, will give Biden a strong, clear victory. The electoral college can mess things up (as it did last time), but even then, if the vote is counted correctly, I think Biden (as things stand at this point) will win.The problem is that Trump is doing everything in his power to reduce the number of Democratic votes that are counted. Democrats are more likely to be concerned about Covid-19 (in fact, it’s been much more of a political issue than I ever would have predicted) and are much more comfortable voting if they can do so by mail. To combat this, Trump has been complaining the whole time that voting by mail should be stopped, and a couple of weeks ago, he appointed one of his political cronies as Postmaster General. He also has shown willingness to send armed force to majority-Democrat cities, and I am concerned that this will be a precursor to voter suppression. Finally, I have no idea what is going on with Putin and I don’t want to spin theories that aren’t fully-formed, but Russia has been implicated in election interference in the past.I don’t know what’s going to happen, and I don’t know if we can stop it, but overwhelming numbers for Biden have to be part of the solution.

@Cousin_Isobel @Ladyfat I’m not American but I’m sharing because I agree with this so much. (Also I know enough Americans and as America’s hat, I think I at least get an opinion. I think Canada’s well-being is going to be dreadfully affected by America’s choices in the future).

@Ladyfat I’ve tried justifying voting for Biden, but my conscious isn’t letting me go along with it. I wouldn’t be able to sleep well knowing I voted for a slimy pervert (same with Trump, actually). So I’ll probably find some other lesser-known person to write on the ballot knowing full well one of these clowns is getting into office anyway.

@ellewinter @Ladyfat And that's the conundrum. Women have to choose between their reproductive rights and their rights as women. So there really is no choice for women.
