here's an article from engadget with a less skewed headline perhapshttps://www.engadget.com/mozilla-firefox-250-employees-layoffs-151324924.html

@sireebob @g there’s significantly more nuance in that verge article than you’d get from the headline FWIW.

@Metaph @g yeah, here's the article: https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/11/21363424/mozilla-layoffs-quarter-staff-250-people-new-revenue-focusi am probably in the minority but i really wish they'd just build a better browser, particularly on mobile. i don't care about pocket, or their vpn, or whatever hubs is. but this is clearly how they think they can survive financially and i am not a businessdog :bizdog: so i don't know what they could be doing differently

@sireebob @g this is generally my feeling too, although I might trust Firefox more with their VPN than the 3 year subscription I got with Nord VPN approximately 2 weeks before news broke that they failed to do basic VPN things like preventing literal interception of communication from their servers

@sireebob Hopefully people will start to notice. We were once able to oust a former CEO who opposed same-sex marriage, although Mozilla voted on DRM as a recommendation for HTML5 standards and we couldn't stop that.Considering migrating to Pale Moon although me having a smartphone complicates this a little. Pale Moon can save some technical hiccups if Mozilla decides to implement radical changes. #Mozilla #Firefox #capitalism #america #UnitedStates

@sireebob that means this is Mozilla's death throes before being purchased as IP at auction. One last "intend to profit" cash grab before the Foundation/Corporation liquidates. http://csinvesting.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/creating-value-through-corporate-restructuring-stuart-c-gilson-edward-i-altman.pdfI legitimately wonder how many Antifa members got fired today. I'm worried about at least five I know of who are excellent coders when they're not Smashing The State (TM).

@sireebob > Mozilla is the not-for-profit behind the lightning fast Firefox browser. How tf does one suddenly go to focusing on making money from commercial products after years of being a non-profit that puts people over profits? At this point, I would say they shouldn’t be a non-profit organization anymore.

@seanking my tweet does oversimplify things. mozilla corporation (mozilla.com) is separate from mozilla foundation (mozilla.org). one would hope there would share goals and maybe they do but were just stuck between a rock and a hard place, but i find that hard to believe. the corporate side has made questionable decisions for years, imo.

@karan @masstransitkrow yeah. it was good to see they're going to pay employees and cover their health care through the end of the year. not so great is that they will be focusing less on firefox and more on new products. if this is any indication of things to come, i imagine ultimately they will stop working on firefox as we know it entirely and just fork chromium. i hope not but think so. disappointing

@realcaseyrollins When they claim to "put people over profit" and basically make the only other [good|not-WebKit based] browser?Well, okay, that's not shocking either, but it's still not good.
