I’m in the market for a new keyboard. I’m considering a mechanical one. What successes or lessons learned have you had with keyboards that you’d be willing to share?

@patcoll Tactile is a must (for typing at least), and actually tactile not some weird microbump. And you don't have to spend a lot to get a good board.Cherry MX-style switches are cheap and consistent in quality across brands (some brands are even better than Cherry). Downside is most switches aren't very tactile. Blues are really the only tactile switch in the standard Cherry line, and they're clicky.Other switches may be better but the knockoffs may be considerably worse.

@skunksarebetter brown mx are also tactile and without the clicky sound. I use themfor years. @patcoll 1. tactile switches are great for typing2. be aware that mechanical keyboards are much louder even with nonclicky switches 3. not everybody likes that really long key travel4. i personally, after 6 years of mechanical keyboard daily use, still type faster (~95-100wpm) on my thinkpads, than on mechanics (~85-90wpm)5. my personal piece of advice: if you don't type a lot, you don't need it

@marian_mizik @patcoll Browns aren't very good in my opinion, not tactile enough. Some MX "clone" switches have brown-like switches that are more tactile. Of course this is all personal preference, and a lot of people love browns exactly for the lesser tactility. Also typing a lot isn't really a requirement, a lot of entry and mid level boards are cheap enough for a random splurge buy. Of course if you want an ergonomic board with programmable keys, etc. it'll be a lot more.
