@dajbelshaw @cathal Good stuff. My anecdata: in six years of self-hosting mail I’ve never had difficulty getting my outgoing mail delivered to the big players. Can’t argue the other points though.

@futzle What do you use? Is there some deeper magic of which I'm not aware?@cathal

@dajbelshaw @futzle @cathalMake sure you're signing outgoing with DKIM and using SPF?All I've ever needed to do.I mostly stopped hosting my personal stuff because I got tired of babysitting the software.

@toast Ah right, so I have to sort out SPF and DKIM to get my personal domain to work with Protonmail. Sounds like it's no harder than that?@futzle @cathal

@dajbelshaw @futzle @cathal that's the DNS side For DKIM you also need to plug a signer into your pipeline, but it shouldn't be too hard

@toast Sadly, that comes under the 'avoiding being a sysadmin' part of my post 😉@futzle @cathal

@dajbelshaw @toast @cathal Same here, the only magic I do is a static IP, SPF records and DKIM signing. I’ve got reverse DNS (PTR) record for IPv4 but don’t think it’s had much effect. I also don’t think DKIM has had much effect: a spam filter I use at $dayjob [sysadmin] considers DKIM headers to be only slightly positive. I think the most important magic is to stay the hell off of blocklists like DNSRBL. A static IP helps a lot because you own your IP and your reputation. IMO.
