       @ryen @thegibson The way to test this is for people likely to be watched, to send private messages about meetups with obvious keywords, and see if anyone unexpected shows up. Make sure the place is clean and don't *be* there, just watch a nannycam.Pigs love entrapment, and they should love it even more on the receiving end.

       @TheGibson I don't think they subpoenaed messages or broke encrytion or anything fancy, they probably just joined a group using an invite they found on Twitter or something. A lot of protestors don't really expect the police or feds to be joining their groups, and they don't really have a way to verify who's a fed, so it's probably not too hard for feds to find their way in.

       @montagsoup @thegibson Encryption is necessary, not sufficient to prevent infiltration. Telegram is still “bad,” because it has no way for people to tell who’s likely to be a fed. It’s a side-channel weakness present in every group conversation program I know of, but that doesn’t make it stop being a weakness. Nevertheless some protection is better than nothing, so if the only weakness requires human engineering, that still makes Telegram better than Discord.

I've tracked the efforts of police to monitor communications, and generally if there isn't an informant, then there will be an undercover officer. Or both.One protest group promoted an undercover cop to the leadership role because he was more organized than anyone else, and could get people to talk to each other.
