what do you think about wearing goggles and face shields in addition to masks?

i hate it tbh. seems like some facilities in the US still can't get enough ppe and now everyday folks are supposed to buy not only masks, but goggles and face shields? other countries have flattened the curve with just masks and smart reopening. this seems like another way to blame people for going about their lives, but do nothing to actually help them. that's my 2 cents so far

anyway, masks are definitely proven to be effective, so do wear them and keep a distance. the other stuff seems excessive to me. but i am not a doctor.

@sireebob COVID infects through the eyes and mouth, so masks are mostly there to protect other people from you - goggles are the real MVP in personal blocking. If everyone is wearing a mask then their viral spread is kept to a minimum which is great, but as we know many people do not - so the goggles are there to actually defend against their spread.

@polychrome that makes sense. it's not like you're going to projectile-cry on somebody. and i guess if nothing else, it's harder to rub your eyes (when your hands may have touched a surface with covid) - but tbh if my eyes or nose are itchy i am not powerful enough to resist it. i'm just not.is there data on the efficacy of goggles yet?

@polychrome i've been following @zeynep@twitter.com tufecki's takes on all this, since she seems to be honest and reasonable. she's been encouraging mask-wearing since day 1 and has been critical of the CDC and WHO for discouraging their use initially. so far, i haven't seen her say anything about goggles related to covid - more that (shatterproof) goggles are useful to protect yourself from tear gas and other things that might get hurled at you in the street.

@sireebob I would like to have goggle data myself, so I don't really have anything in that.I've had to itch my nose a few times before COVID while wearing the mask you see in my profile picture - it's an interesting practice in self control c.cWorse case I guess you could excuse yourself to an isolated spot, wipe hands with alcohol and scritch it off :blobcatmlem:

@polychrome fortunately for now, i rarely need to be around people. (i guess unfortunately as well since i am unemployed(/unemployable?).)
