I had no idea Garmin was still in business. Every car I've ever been in since 2008(?) used an iPhone or Android for nav, sometimes with a dash screen.Apparently ransomware, they may be well and truly fucked: https://www.zdnet.com/article/garmin-services-and-production-go-down-after-ransomware-attack/#garmin

@mdhughes on what planet does a company's SaaS infrastructure touch anything Windows? I can't get my head around that.

@alrs Tons of companies do that, that's what .NET and Azure is all about. "Let's run security-crippled VMS on the desktop!" also means "Let's run security-crippled VMS on our servers!"

@mdhughes yeah, I can imagine using Azure, but certainly not running a Windows VM in it. I guess I can imagine Garmin having a 15-year-old web property written in .NET, but it still sounds wacko.

@alrs VB, nice. I'm sure they *mean* VB.NET, but there's like a 20% chance they still mean VB 7 or whatever was EOL'd.

@mdhughes Garmin is huge. Car nav is so 2000s.Garmin is big for fitness tech (GPS watches, fitness watches, etc). Big enough that they have Disney (Marvel and Star Wars) licenses. On top of that, pilots relying on flyGarmin currently can't lift off, as the FAA requires them to use the latest database when navigating.

@mookie Only wearable fitness brands I've ever seen on Humans are watch and Fitbit; admittedly I don't gym or run in groups (even before plague), but I do read a little about fitness. Search shows Garmin worked with Nike+, until this, but nobody I knew said so.I'm not a pilot. So Garmin's been 100% invisible to me for over a decade. Just kinda weird for a company to vanish that utterly from visibility.

@mdhughes Fair enough. I am a runner and see them all the time. They are the go-to for athletes. Also head into big box stores (after pandemic) and you’ll find them right there at Target and Best Buy. Any list of fitness trackers will have them. They have far from disappeared.

@mdhughes For strategic reasons, Garmin has taken all navigation apps off the market on May 14th, 2018.https://www.navigon.com/en/

@peemee "Strategic retreat" meaning total rout. Weirder and weirder.
