The Irish Green Party leadership vote was won by the current leader Eamon Ryan, who fell asleep in the Dáil (Parliament) the other day. But even a doddery old fool like him is better than his challenger - a woman who will not acknowledge women. On World Menstrual Hygiene Day, she tweeted: " #PeriodPoverty is an issue affecting many people in Ireland & around the world We must continue to educate, empower and end the stigma attached to menstruation & work to ensure access to period products is available for those who need them"

@HebrideanHecate @Maud_Gonner I've met her. And that's all I have to say about that because I like my eyeballs unrolled at this time of night so I can read before bed.

@Maud_Gonner @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake It was a very brief meeting about a decade ago, when she was first running for deputy. I remember candidates were making short speeches. Catherine came into the room engulfed by her fan club. It was a little bit of that scene in Mean Girls where Rachel McAdams is introduced, carried atop of the footballer players shoulders. She made the first part of her speech in Irish, but the whole thing was both very shouty and shouted over by people yelling out her name (go Catherine, g'wan ye gurl ya!) that as a casual speaker I could barely make anything out. What I could understand in the English parts was a lot of talk about being a woman, about how politics needed more women but nothing of any substance or of benefit to other women (tbh though, that could be said of most female candidates at the time). She them floated off with her human cloud to the bar area, where people were mingling. She was chatty, but was never "off" if you now what I mean. I've met a lot of politicians in my time, some of them world leaders, and for all hangers in and 'their people' around them, they normally take themselves off to the side alone, or at least with one confidant for part of the time, whereas Catherine had a bunch of people around her constantly. I imagine she's the walking embodiment of having a Twitter page open ALL THE TIME.I never heard her mention any ecology related though. It was all social justice. That, and how important it was to have a woman like her in politics.

I don’t often do this, but there’s something about her I just don’t trust. And as for the ‘social justice’ bit, if that’s her schtick, why is the Green Party manifesto so crap on that front? @PennyLope @Maud_Gonner @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake

@Camille @Maud_Gonner @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoakeA very cynical attempt to chase the 'pink vote' = social justice dontchaknow. I honestly think that they feel taking about social justice issues sounds way more governmental that talking about the planet.

Indeed.Well, the social justice stuff in their manifesto is shit. And from peeps I know who were seeking to influence the content of the Programme for Government, via the Greens, they’re wildly out of their depth on that front. Stick to the green stuff Greens, it’s why people vote for ya. @PennyLope @Maud_Gonner @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake

@Camille @Maud_Gonner @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake I'll add that while Catherine definitely isn't my cup of tea, I try not to cast too much on her personally as women in politics do have a lot of shit to deal with. Those hanging about her though, well I think the high school clique analogy is very appropriate. And I hated high school.

@Camille @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake That's interesting, thanks @PennyLope !I do tend to support women in politics, but only if they support women too. The social justice element does not surprise me with the Greens. I've always wished they would stick to their own point, but they do attract all the nutters - in the past it was anti-vaxxers, anti-fluoride in the water, homeopaths etc. It sounds like Martin's faction is similarly crazed, just along TWAW lines, and they seem to have had more than a 48% influence on the policies.

@Maud_Gonner @Camille @JackyHolyoake @PennyLope I've got zero time for any of them, wouldn't trust them as far as i could throw them, and there's no way i'll praise a female politicianunless she is genuinely standing for women, I have yet to see this.Never liked the Greens, precisely because they are insane urbaniteswho don't understand the country and don't give a damn about it

@HebrideanHecate @Maud_Gonner @Camille @JackyHolyoake The one national conference I went to in Ireland for them, the country folk and city folk sat at different tables. All while the reps were talking about how important the EU was to environmentalism on account of the fact that the environment doesn't do boarders and division.

I’m a city gal, but I’ve heard so many people comment on how urban-centric many of their policies are. If you live in rural Ireland, you need a car, for example. Unless you want to be unemployed. @PennyLope @HebrideanHecate @Maud_Gonner @JackyHolyoake

@Camille @PennyLope @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake Rural Ireland has been destroyed by ridiculous planning. We never got over sub-division of land, so we have spatterings of remote houses instead of villages and towns. The Green ideal of villages connected by public transport won't work without knocking down all the far-flung McMansions and starting again. (I wouldn't be opposed to that, but I have no idea how we would be able to pay for it.)
