Typical Ireland - why make decisions and provide controversial services when you can put your head in the sand and hide behind inefficiency, and shur isn't England just over the water? I suspect that in the absence of peer-reviewed medical guidelines, they are waiting for this all to blow over. This also means no one can sue the HSE for unintended consequences from self-medication with hormones.https://gcn.ie/trans-people-self-medicate-long-waitlists/?fbclid=IwAR3HaG0wnW464Wng6-2UCwprWrEWIxQo4WbHgLFKH9UMwkv_nsbqbYTTQp8

@ChristieFox @AnneBevan The trouble is that in Ireland, we have to wait for every health service, sometimes for years. So the waiting isn't actually prescribed for the patient's benefit; it's because the system is overwhelmed. I think the HSE might see this as a happy coincidence.

@ChristieFox @AnneBevan @HebrideanHecate Of course they don't want to compare waiting times for transitioning medication with waiting times for cancer treatment or anything serious like that. But what they are reporting is illegal activity - no one should be smuggling drugs into the country, or obtaining drugs for self-medication, or advising people - usually young and ill-informed people - how to do this and encouraging them to take these drugs without medical supervision.

@Ladyfat I imagine 'neutrois' is pronounced as French to rhyme with 'moi' as Miss Piggy would say it, or 'mwah' like the most irritating and insincere air kiss.

@AllineCormier @Fullycaffeinated I never noticed the female body-count or lack of agency in the films, because I was too amazed at how well they *got* Europe. The set-pieces weren't filmed at major landmarks or tourist traps, and the background was true to rainy, wintry, European cities and landscapes. They have a realist style, unusual for Hollywood,* that fooled me into thinking it was representational in other areas. Going to have a think about other aspects of film-making that blind me to lack of female roles and representations. Films that make me laugh are definitely on that list.*I realise you are both Canadian. πŸ˜€

@Camille OT but Lori Lightfoot is a glorious name! If anyone can face down Trump, it should be a woman with a heroic name like that.

@Camille I went to school with siblings called Thunder. It was unfortunate for them that AC/DC released Thunderstruck at that time. πŸ˜†

The Irish Green Party leadership vote was won by the current leader Eamon Ryan, who fell asleep in the DΓ‘il (Parliament) the other day. But even a doddery old fool like him is better than his challenger - a woman who will not acknowledge women. On World Menstrual Hygiene Day, she tweeted: " #PeriodPoverty is an issue affecting many people in Ireland & around the world We must continue to educate, empower and end the stigma attached to menstruation & work to ensure access to period products is available for those who need them"

@Camille @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake That's interesting, thanks @PennyLope !I do tend to support women in politics, but only if they support women too. The social justice element does not surprise me with the Greens. I've always wished they would stick to their own point, but they do attract all the nutters - in the past it was anti-vaxxers, anti-fluoride in the water, homeopaths etc. It sounds like Martin's faction is similarly crazed, just along TWAW lines, and they seem to have had more than a 48% influence on the policies.

@Camille @PennyLope @HebrideanHecate @JackyHolyoake Rural Ireland has been destroyed by ridiculous planning. We never got over sub-division of land, so we have spatterings of remote houses instead of villages and towns. The Green ideal of villages connected by public transport won't work without knocking down all the far-flung McMansions and starting again. (I wouldn't be opposed to that, but I have no idea how we would be able to pay for it.)

@AllineCormier @AnneBevan I never looked for groups to join. I'm not much of a 'joiner'. The campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment to the constitution, which was effectively a ban on abortion, comprised lots of different groups working toward a common goal. So I went on protests since 1992, when I was 17, but I never marched under anyone's banner.I looked up to individual feminist women, like the journalist Nell McCafferty, who is brilliantly outspoken and courageous, but she is getting on in years now, and I think her mind is not as clear as it was. Our first female president, Mary Robinson, became my absolute hero when I was 15. I just looked up the National Women's Council of Ireland - and under their feminist constitution they wrote "By β€˜woman’ we refer to any person who identifies as a woman."The Rape Crisis Centre have done outstanding work for women in Ireland. The Irish Countrywomen's Association is often dismissed as farmers' wives gossiping in the kitchen. But the natural 'conservatism' of rural women - by which I mean the tendency to think before they speak, not to follow fashion, and to work slowly and steadily and quietly toward change, is actually a secret weapon. They support the Rape Crisis Centre, the campaign against sex trafficking, and they quietly supported the movement to Repeal the 8th without alienating their traditional base. So of all the feminist groups, even though they might not call themselves that, I would say they are the most effective.
