I think it's time to discuss about the new direction intended by @libreoffice to build a restrictive / commercial /enterprise edition.#LibreOffice #FOSS #Linux

@avndp Hi, see Mike's answer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/libreoffice/comments/hl9v41/libreoffice_personal_use/fx2vr0j/ – In short, it's not about building a "restrictive" version. LibreOffice is and will always be free for everyone to use. It's about positioning LibreOffice so that large companies are encouraged to get it from ecosystem members, who then contribute code and resources back to the project. A healthy ecosystem is essential to LibreOffice in the long-term.

@libreoffice will there be any separate license for enterprise edition or it is just dedicated support system for enterprises and stuff like that?

@libreoffice @avndp This positioning is not being questioned. The whole point is understandable and the OpenSSH example posted in Reddit is self-explanatory.Tha chosen naming is what's questioned here. "Personal Edition" makes one think that LibreOffice is becoming a shareware or the like. Please consider using "Community Edition" instead, which clearly states all you want to state and doesn't mislead in any way.

@libreoffice @avndp Seems like some of the language implies that this new personal edition should not be used except for personal use. If people read it that way, organizations may stay away.

@josejfernandez @libreoffice @avndp I agree with this approach. Better phrasing would be along the lines of:"This is the Community Edition of LibreOffice and comes with no technical support or services. If you or your organization wish to receive enterprise support as well as contribute to the further development of LibreOffice, please look at the products provided by LibreOffice Certified Developers(link to an actively updated list of them)."This phrasing doesn't implicitly disallow non-personal usage of the free LibreOffice, indicates how much support that version gets (none), and points organizations to service providers that can support the product.

@avndp I can't answer that, as "enterprise" (LTS) editions won't be from us. We'll continue to offer LibreOffice, exactly the same as today, for anyone to use. But with an updated name, we'll more strongly suggest that large enterprises get an LTS version from a company in the ecosystem.

@bVork @avndp @josejfernandez Thanks for the ideas! The problem with "Community Edition" is that it's quite vague. We often talk about the "LibreOffice Community" – so is it a version for them? Or made by them? Who exactly is a "Community" version targeted at? If we want to make it super clear that LibreOffice is ideal for home users, small businesses/organisations etc., but larger companies should support the ecosystem, "Personal" is arguably a clearer name. But the discussions are ongoing...

@libreoffice @bVork @avndp One word can't contain all the meaning you intend, be it "Personal" or "Community". Both are vague in different ways. However, I prefer how "Community" is vague over "Personal". The first is greatly widespread amongst open source projects. The second, not so.Don't forget that the first reactions the "Personal Edition" statement has caused have been of the WTF type.
