@ghost_bird it seems we constantly have this undercurrent of threat towards any group of people who may be vulnerable for social, political or purely personal reasons. I know it’s an ongoing part of the human condition, but it sure is an unhealthy and counter-productive one. Bullying, under whatever name, and always driven by fear.

@eldang @shanecoughlan That was the smart move, I think. My feeling is they don’t actually have the numbers for a widespread thing (GamerGate was the unusual result of an amplification technique that worked) but they’re certainly willing and able to do doxxing and organised harassment.

@shanecoughlan Bullying’s a way to get a quick hit of power and agency when you’re not secure in either, I guess. Goes with authoritarian hierarchy and the tenuous exercise of authority - cops, teachers, low-level bureaucrats, and so on. But also just entitled young men who bought into the wrong idea of masculinity.

@eldang @shanecoughlan That was why I wasn’t very happy with the warnings that advised everyone to lock down their accounts and go silent. But equally, I didn’t want to claim there was no risk - hence the mild frustration I’m venting here.

@ghost_bird I spent some time recently going through some key websites for the American alt-right. The comments were...enlightening. Self-contained hateful ideologies in echo-chambers precluded on the ridicule and violent reaction towards measured critical discourse.

@shanecoughlan There’s always been a strong anti-intellectual streak in conservatism, of course. Cory Robin blames it on Nietzsche and the Romantics, but I think that’s probably more of an intellectual gloss over something more basic.
