I think Rep. Rose is a little off-base. Simply rounding all prices to the nearest 5¢ should have no overall effect at all on the balance sheets of retailers.Suspending production of the cent would permit the Mint to focus on producing the much more durable nickel, which more likely to return to circulation, less likely to be thrown in the trash. Of course, that's not a comprehensive coinage reform (I have a plan for that), but as an interim measure it makes sense.https://www.npr.org/2020/06/21/880958665/the-latest-pandemic-shortage-coins-are-the-new-toilet-paper

@publius The whole "pennies could mean the difference between profit and loss!!!" is just hyperbole. But from a pricing and marketing perspective, there is a psychological thing about whole numbers. Overall, people look at ".99" differently than they do "1.00", especially when they are not really thinking about it. All of that being said, the penny does need to go.

@gedvondur The whole "99¢" thing has always struck me as a symptom of a sick society. But it doesn't really matter, because sales tax in most States basically randomizes the total price, which is what would be rounded.

@gedvondur Under my reform proposal, the cent denomination would be dropped from coinage. The coins would be one-half, one, & two dimes, ½, 1, & 2 dollars, & ½, 1, & 2 eagles. The designs on the dime & dollar denominated coins would be fixed, preferably drawn from the best coins of our past. The paper $1 & $2 would be discontinued. The eagle coins would be circulating commemoratives, with designs changing from year to year, & would probably not replace the $5, $10, & $20 notes.

@publius From a strictly Point of Sale perspective, register drawer inserts (in general) have 5 coin slots and five paper money slots. So as long as it works with that, you might not get too much retail pushback.

@publius PX and commissaries in Germany in the 70's and 80's (and since, I'm sure) didn't handle pennies. Total came to $4.87, you paid $4.85. Total came to $4.88, you paid $4.90. EVERYONE understood that it all evens out in the end.
