Following up on this: I'm doing a bit of research on the very early days of the fediverse, like in the Laconia / Friendika era. One name that comes up now and again is Indymedia, but I've found very few resources about its relationship to the fediverse. Was Indymedia a part of it at some point?The closest I could find was that their Newswire service was powered by OStatus, but that was an obscure mention by @kaniini many months ago.

@sean I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of confusion among newcomers or potential newcomers that Mastodon = The Fediverse. One major example, a while ago, there was someone who left twatter and joined a fediverse instance, only to get banned, then went around saying he got "banned from Mastodon." Many others took this to mean he got banned from the entire fediverse, and ran with that story, when in reality, he just got banned from a single instance, that ran Mastodon software and had "mastodon" in its URL.I'd suggest making sure to distinguish the differences between the following:- Mastodon software- The Mastodon software developers- Fediverse instances that happen to run on Mastodon software- Instances that have "mastodon" or "mstdn" in their URL- Instances that run on other software but still federate with those running Mastodon (e.g. Pleroma, Misskey, etc.)
