       @salixlucida There’s always a chance that, especially in these volatile times, he overplays his hand.  Since the biz class was let into the party, their concerns may safeguard HK.  If a raid of HK alienates production in Shenzhen, or real growth drops because of a TW blockade...  Well, it depends how much he has solidified power and how willing he is to just go for broke and take the damage, I guess.  共匪是共匪。要是他發狂，那化為王賊。:p

       @Shufei I guess back in 1997 everyone naively thought that the Communist Party of China will be gone long before 2047, or even 2007. No one back then would have predicted the longevity of the regime, as evil as Jiang Zemin was. None of us even predicted the revival of the Soviet authoritarianism and world domination attempts in the form of perpetual Putin rule, either. I miss the optimism and innocence of the 1990s.

       @Shufei The biggest mistake was that the western world conflated capitalism with freedom. That if China and Russia opened themselves to global trade and foreign investors they'll embrace freedom. That WTO membership would mean freedom to people. Instead China invented the "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" (all the predatory elements of capitalism with none of its positive attributes) and Russia became one big corrupt mafia racket under Czar Vladimir I.

       @salixlucida I remember the 90’s as a time of anxiety.  I never drank the neoliberal coolaid.  The innocence was a decadent farce covering up imperial rot.  The mismanagement was there, here and in the vaunted EU.  But indeed, it was better than this for the health of society to believe, that liberal society was “going somewhere”.  Nothing since 9/11 has been right in the west.And with Xi, the 中國夢 is dying too.  I always hoped some kind of new sensible arrangement might be had with TW...
