@salixlucida There’s always a chance that, especially in these volatile times, he overplays his hand. Since the biz class was let into the party, their concerns may safeguard HK. If a raid of HK alienates production in Shenzhen, or real growth drops because of a TW blockade... @salixlucida I remember the 90’s as a time of anxiety. I never drank the neoliberal coolaid. The innocence was a decadent farce covering up imperial rot. The mismanagement was there, here and in the vaunted EU. But indeed, it was better than this for the health of society to believe, that liberal society was “going somewhere”. Nothing since 9/11 has been right in the west.And with Xi, the 中國夢 is dying too. I always hoped some kind of new sensible arrangement might be had with TW...

My bias is someone who was in traditional culture, religious circles for a long time. We generally saw them as a “邪法” popular cult misappropriating and misusing exercises for control of members. This can be dangerous for the health, and certainly unruly for society. Their MO is like Scientology.

Be aware they are generally disavowed by traditional practitioners on grounds of both method and cultish ideology.How they still shnooker westerners is beyond me. Until 10 years ago, factions worked things out behind the curtain and there was a sense things would slowly get more open and free. It was a tacit social contract. Xi’s faction has been empowered to clamp down hard, and he has been very smart about it. They are a danger for the future of China.Just like RT is right about the USA but we shouldn’t forget they are Russian propaganda, same with Epoch Times, is all.

@publius @snowdusk_ This was the deal. It was always the deal. People have been working hard on it, extending rule of law and such, making elections more widespread for higher positions. The CCP was supposed to ease up, get better. But HK is less the prize than TW. For that to happen a whole new national edifice would have to be built. MANY people have worked in good faith for it. HK was the showroom to prove mainland was going to live up to the name PRC.Well... Was. That is now gone.

@publius @snowdusk_ It’s a shame upon the whole “international community” that Taiwan has been steadily more and more isolated even as she grows more mature as a real, functioning democracy (far more than the USA I daresay). And it is a vile shame upon mainland that the powers that be have done jack all to meet Taiwan halfway. I could not favour independence but I understand it. PRC is a sick joke.Sun built the best from the west and empire both. Sad China has largely not lived up to it.
