I'm on Ubuntu and I use IceCat from Guix. Does anyone know how I can give Guix IceCat more fonts, so it doesn't break emoji?

@clacke Do you have fonts-noto-color-emoji installed?

@clacke Sparky Linux and Trisquel have IceCat in their repo's, so you can install the deb-version from there as a last resort. Also, for a more up-to-date browser you could try LibreWolf.https://librewolf-community.gitlab.io/

@desikn I'll keep that in mind, but my question was more on the low level, how do I get a guix program to have fonts, rather than on the higher level of which fonts. My native-packaged browsers have all the emoji some default way I haven't even bothered to understand. Maybe I have this font, otherwise there is at least some font that covers it.

@desikn That's good to know, thanks! I'll try to figure out the guix fonts issue, but this sounds like a neat fallback if I give up.

@desikn Hadn't heard of LibreWolf before, that's interesting to know too.

@clacke Native-packaged apps have emoji's because fonts-noto-color-emoji is installed. Maybe installing the Emoji font manually in some Guix font directory can fix the problem?https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-emoji

@clacke I've ssen Guix has the font-google-noto package, perhaps the emoji font is included there. Worth a try to install.https://guix.gnu.org/packages/font-google-noto-20171025/

@desikn Actually turns out the emoji font just takes up a few MB, but the CJK fonts take up 1.2 GB installed!

guix's fc-list says the font is there, but icecat doesn't pick it up. Checking if https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/9lkcmg/linux_firefox_use_system_emojis_in_web_pages_but/ works.

Yes! Going to about:config and setting font.name-list.emoji to Noto Color Emoji worked! Now, since the whole noto bundle is over a gigabyte installed, I'll see if I can get the Twemoji font installed instead.

@clacke I think it is called EmojiOne or JoyPixels now... I managed to configure it via fontconfig on Linux.

@clacke Yes Noto is huge, it covers many languages and styles.

@ashwinvis I discovered I already have Noto installed on the Ubuntu side, so I can remove it on the Guix side for now. Once I find whatever smaller color emoji font, I can remove the Noto Ubuntu package too maybe. I think I already have several other smaller fonts covering the CJK set just fine.At some point this thing will get a huge SSHD, but for now I need to be not very but a little bit thrifty with the space to fit the SSD it came with.

@clacke Noto is indeed huge. Btw... Removing dejavu fonts also improve emoji rendering.

Nope, had to have noto in guix or nix. System noto won't take, even though guix fc-list says it's there. So odd.
