If you blankly refuse any tracing app, you’re a digital anti-vaxxer. Simple. Your choice. Your freedom. Contact tracing is hard work. It really needs any help to speed it up. That’s why you should think about it. It’s not about your freedom. It’s about us all surviving.

@jwildeboer and some of the privacy protections already built-in are expanded upon at https://pca.st/episode/63e5c4bc-19ee-468e-b1ec-5c17dd6348a8?t=4771

In Germany we are in the quite lucky position to “only” have some 30000 active cases ATM. But contact tracing for 30k people going back two weeks is hard work. And that work scales exponentially when we get more cases after lifting restrictions.

Germany does not have an official tracing app yet. But those in charge promised it will be open source, use the Apple/Google protocol. Our protests against a centralised solution were heard. So now I think we should give it a chance.

I will install it. Period. Mistakes will be made. Some will try to extend its scope. That’s the way things work. Our vigilance is needed.

@jwildeboerThat is a quite absurd and irresponsible statement, IMHO, as it conflates two very distinct issues, and reduces the importance of the harm of anti vaxxers. Sorry, but there's no way I could agree with that.

@RuiSeabra why am I not surprised about your reaction? :) And no. I am not interested in a discussion. I made up my mind. I stand by what I said.

Oh, and a few other points. I am not interested to know who was patient zero or where exactly the virus originated. It’s irrelevant ATM. The virus is here and infecting people. That’s the problem we need to solve.

I also am not interested in the Blame Game. Was it the WHO? The Chinese? I. Don’t. Care. We need to get the virus under control. That’s our task as society. We need to protect all our fellow citizens. Globally. Give me solutions. Don’t give me more irrelevant problems. Thanks.

@jwildeboerIt's not a discussion, anti vaxxers cause real harm. Citizen control also causes real harm. The way this virus spreads so easily, they should instead invest in capacitating health support networks. For years the capitalist society has treated health as a business; that is no longer viable, a huge investment in capacity is a requirement of a strongly interconnected works, where viruses can spread easily. That has no economic incentive for a business.

@jwildeboerI don't think any country should have a tracking app, they should have a receiving infrastructure. The app should be Free Software, follow a good protocol (Google+Apple, revised, seems to be), and then you as a citizen of country X voluntarily join up and define which endpoint to use, in your case, Germany's. Otherwise, no it's not really acceptable... The risks for abuse are huge.

@jwildeboer We have had an official tracing app for almost a month. The major problem with that is that it hasn't been allowed to App Store because Apple doesn't want a solution competing with theirs. It sucks because waiting for their solution means iPhone users couldn't have been part of an existing solution for weeks.

@sesivany hm. So how did Singapore and Australia manage to get their app approved? They also don’t use the new API.

@jwildeboer They were probably faster. The #covid19cz people said that Apple at some point didn't want any other covid tracing apps in until they have their API ready. I'm pretty sure their API will be a more systematic solution, but it's not ready yet and this basically crippled smart covid tracking in our country for weeks, critical weeks.

@sesivany But is the Czech app being readied for the Apple/Google API? So that it can be released next week, when both Apple and Google claim to have the OS updates ready?

@jwildeboer yes, they're according to info on their Github. But meanwhile GPS-based tracing got widespread here. Apple allowed it in althought it's much more privacy abusive (all location data sent out and stored on servers) just because it was part of an already existing app.

@sesivany Hm. But GPS is even worse for proximity tracing. The typical infection vectors are proximity in closed rooms - where GPS is unreliable. So yes, that’s worse. I agree.

@jwildeboer So eRouska was just allowed to App Store: https://apps.apple.com/cz/app/erou%C5%A1ka/id1509210215There are some practical problems with it because iOS doesn't allow it to run on the background just like that. So you have to do tricks with the proximity sensor to keep it running, but at least people can use it now. \o/

@sesivany But also means that Apple seemingly does not hold up apps just because they don’t use the new API, correct?

@jwildeboer hard to say. The app has not changed, we can only guess why they were holding its release for 3 weeks.

@jwildeboerIf by that you mean that you're happy that I'm happy that there's more Free Software code, but the fight ain't over yet, then good for you! Other than that, I would have to ask where has Jan been taken to, and who are you with my friend's face? ;)
