I just searched for "System 76" on duckduckgo, and was presented with an ad for Target: "Shop System76 Laptop and get them today!"On the one hand, kind of shady (obviously Target doesn't sell System76 laptops and clicking on the ad took me to a page selling mostly HP computers)On the other hand, kind of promising β *some* algorithm Target is running has convinced them it's (1) worth advertising on DuckDuckGo and (2) worth buying ads on a keyword that is associated *only* with #linux PCs

@codesections To be fair, Target seems to come up quite often for obscure searches only to link to unrelated product listings. My sense is they have a strategy of aggressively buying barely adjacent keywords. (Perhaps when these keywords are not in high demand and so marginally priced.)

My sense is they have a strategy of aggressively buying barely adjacent keywords. That's fair. I guess, on the third hand, that's it's a sign of just how low my standards are: Target considering a linux-only computer a "barely adjacent keyword" feels like *good news*#yearOfTheLinuxDesktop :(

@codesections @beadsland Don't fret, every year has been an improvement on the desktop space for Linux . We got System76, Mintboxes, Tux computers and Starlabs, to name a few. That are selling computers with Linux preinstalled. Remember we are the 3%. π

@codesections I don't want to burst your bubble. But its most likely a feature that the ad networks provide that allow you to bet on competitors. And its a simple toggle."Shop $var Laptop, and get them today"Its possible that they did a competitor analysis and then just bet on all other non trademarked names. Because if System76 is trademarked they can sue (I'm pretty sure)

@ticoombs > I don't want to burst your bubble. But [content]β¦ Because if System76 is trademarked they can sue (I'm pretty sure)I don't want to burst your bubble, but no they can't :D(Less obnoxiously: I *wish* they could sue, but there've been several cases and it's pretty clear that they can't win under US lawβand Google/etc get good $$$ from people buying ads on their own name to prevent others from doing so)(Not legal advice)
