Remember that we are still in the first wave of #covid19. Be careful out there. That we are lifting some lockdown restrictions is a calculated risk. #WearAMask😷 https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441

@jwildeboerRegarding masks, I'd love if you wrote a blog consolidating your recommendations from your experience: trustworthy how-to make masks, but most importantly how to clean them properly for reuse, and what kind of filters to use between the cloth. ;)

@RuiSeabra IMHO all of that is already on https://diymask.site. Their pattern is a good fit, quite easy to make. Kitchen paper as filter and you're good to go. After four hours (or when mask is wet from sweat etc earlier, take out filter. Iron it hot or washin hot water and soap.

@jwildeboerIs there an analysis on the efficacy of that? I'm not convinced a 20% improvement is worth the effort vs buying disposable ones...

@jwildeboerAccording to this site, kitchen paper is not of much worth against sars-cov-2 https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/paper-towel-effective-against-viruses-diy-mask/

@RuiSeabra My rationale for wearing a cloth mask is NOT that I think it will protect me. It’s never going to be on the N95 level. If more people wear a mask the risk of shedding viruses by people that are infected but not symptomatic gets reduced. And for that you don’t need .2 micron capability.

@RuiSeabra and if you prefer surgical masks (single use) - go for it! ‪#WearAMask😷‬

@jwildeboer I'm trying to weight in on the costs vs benefits.

@RuiSeabra and I think it is not needed to use the criteria for healthcare people in high contamination areas for going shopping or for a walk. The risk calculation is fundamentally different so a N95 or FFP2/3 is IMHO overkill and even a 30% reduction is Good Enough(tm) and definitely better than not wearing a mask at all.

@jwildeboerIt's 0.1 microns, and yeah, you kind of do need, because the smaller droplets are about that size and are so light that air pressure and movement prevent them from immediately falling to the ground and are kept in the air, being breathed in...

@RuiSeabra and those very small droplets do not carry a lot of virus load. So again, when you’re in an area with high levels of contamination (Hospital) you definitely should use N95 or FFP2/3 level. But when you’re walking outside or shopping IMHO that’s overkill. But that’s MY opinion. Feel free to ignore and prefer a disposable N95.

@jwildeboer what's scary about sars-cov-2 is lung infection, especially alveoli cells (it targets ACE2 receptors, which they have) where it can cause pneumonia, which is where the very dangerous possibility of death resides and the reason for the need of ventilators, thinking about this makes me wonder about the safety of the mask recommendations, they look a bit like a red herring in order to reserve those that are effective for the health professionals (ok by me, but I prefer it straightfwd)

@jwildeboer we need re-usable N95 level cheap masks /en masse/ in these situations, but not for everyday life.

@jwildeboer I don't know if you saw this NHK World report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBvFkQizTT4&t=196s but the small droplets are very scary indoors.
