What software can you advice for #zrtp encrypted voice calls / video conferencing? (boost welcome, and come back later to check the answers if you don't have one by youself)And if not something with zrtp anything providing similiar safety. I've heard #jisti desktop does so, but not by default. So I'm not shure if it is safe to use at all, cause I don't know if by a bug it will just switch back to unencrypted. Then there is #jami and #qtox. Thought there wasn't any auditing for them and I've seen both projects spreading misstrust towards the other, leaving me confused.

Ok, here is the reason I will stop giving any positive promotion to #jitsi "A default Jitsi quickinstall setup also uses the #Google STUN servers for WebRTC with only two participants" https://mastodon.infra.de/@galaxis/103861095334491566Something that claims to be secure, but is sneeking #google into their service is nothing I will ever give trust. @FuckOffGoogle

@xr_rostock @hambibleibt Tox has not received an security audit but uses trustworthy security library internally ( https://nacl.cr.yp.to/ by tanja lange, peter schwabe and daniel bernstein)However, it does leak your IP-Adress to the participants and people observing your network (-> peer2peer, a public router has to know where it should route the package, therefore the ip address is public). Use tor to mitigate that, software quality/usability unkown. -> please report back if it works.

@hambibleibt @FuckOffGoogle There is a FOSDEM2018 talk from a Jitsi GSoC developer suggesting to feed Jitsi conferences to google speech API in order to get searchable transcripts and maybe live translation. I remember being very taken aback at hearing this during the talk, and even more so that nobody in the public seemed to notice the (questionable) irony of having used a grab of a tweet of Edward Snowden at Chaos Congress to promote the product earlier in the talk, followed by this..

@hambibleibt @FuckOffGoogle Link to talk: https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/jitsi/I do not want to come across as attacking of the individual presenter here. I don't think they are not well intentioned. (a little silicon valley brainwashed perhaps) He does mention, during the GSoC program an attempt to find an "open source" solution, + there was nothing available, rather than develop it, just go with the ggl "solution" - I think this speaks volumes about everything that is toxic about GSoC and FOSDEM itself.

@kino @hambibleibt @FuckOffGoogle sometimes building working solutions that help people solve problems today is more important than these purity tests

@kino @FuckOffGoogle thx for letting me know! how does #GSoC work? you meet, and others kind of just come and write some code for, however they feel? Thought the questions for me is: How much is the effort of this individual supported/requested by #jitsi?

@hambibleibt @kino @FuckOffGoogle Projects define tasks and offer mentoring, and students pick one of the listed tasks. You'd have to check GSoC history or maybe the student's blig to see how Jitsi defined this one.

@feld it's about strategy, not purity. It's worth planting tomatoes for next month even when you can buy them from a corporate big box store today. You'd think #FOSDEM would be the sort of place where a #GSoC student would learn about the relevant #FreeCode projects I found a bunch of article about with a quick web search.#VoiceRecognition:* https://fosspost.org/alternative-software/developers/open-source-speech-recognition-speech-to-text * https://www.goodfirms.co/blog/best-free-open-source-speech-recognition-software* https://www.ubuntupit.com/best-open-source-speech-recognition-tools-for-linux/@kino @FuckOffGoogle @hambibleibt

@hambibleibt the biggest problem with #Tox from a #UX POV is the fragmentation across OS platforms. Apps for some OS have group chat, while others don't. Anyone could develop an app compatible with the protocol set #Jami uses, but the dev team has an app for each major OS, and features roll out across all of them at the same time. Jami also seems to progress steadily, while Tox dev seems to have been in hibernation for some time.

@dwaltiz that would imply some shared agreements about how to implement a jerk protocol ;P@hambibleibt
