One of the nation’s top experts on infectious diseases told lawmakers today that the estimated mortality rate for novel coronavirus is likely vastly overstated but stressed that the disease still poses a “serious risk” and is far more deadly than the common flu.https://dailycaller.com/2020/03/11/coronavirus-mortality-rate-common-flu/

@NevadaJack That’s from Dr. Anthony Fauci — who has struck me as a grandstander from Day #1.I’ll bet he didn’t vote for Trump.

@rarity @NevadaJack Finally someone can explain this guy to me. I always forget the lure of the limelight when you live your life in obscurity as an 'expert'

@Ylpnfolchik @rarity @NevadaJack I just commented to someone else, that I am confused by his assertion that Coronavirus is 10x worse than the common flu. Based on the data...what the hell is he talking about?

@carolinacally @Ylpnfolchik @NevadaJack His statements today really shook people up.😒The guy is a grandstander, enjoying his 15 mins of fame. He’s exactly what the country doesn’t need now.

@rarity @Ylpnfolchik @NevadaJack He seems to be well respected, but he also seems to be grandstanding on this one.

@carolinacally He is talking about the percent of people who die, not how many. This is an oversimplification but if 1 in 100 who catch the common flu die, 2 in 100 would die if they caught the coronavirus. The numbers seem off because millions catch the common flu but only thousands have been infected by coronavirus, so far.I hope this helps.@Ylpnfolchik @rarity

@NevadaJack @Ylpnfolchik @rarity Right, except, the number of people who have caught this virus isn't really known. If it is as fast spreading as believed, more than thousands may have caught it, but had mild symptoms and never sought treatment. That would lower the mortality rate. That was my point.

@carolinacally @NevadaJack @Ylpnfolchik @rarity - have had the same thought myself. given it's comparatively *mild* symptoms it's almost indistinguishable from the type A and B flu strains.
