I still don't quite understand why an internal 8TB HDD costs twice as much as an external one.Can anyone explain this to me?

@fribbledom They charge more because the market will bear it. Those buying internal drives will care more about specs and reliability, less about price. Those buying external ones just look for the lowest price at Best Buy.

@fribbledom Check the speeds? External ones are often "oh this is just for a backup" and drop speed from the "fast|large|cheap" pick-any-two.

@fribbledom Volume. I do IT but currently for a manufacturing company, and was surprised by this too.The big two costs are initial tooling, and assembly line setup. If it costs $6k to prep the line, even if each board is $20, its cheaper by far to do one run of 10000 than 10 runs of 1000. Both are $200k for the same 10k of boards, but the later case adds an additional $54k to the total.

@dissy614 @fribbledom I care about how my external drives perform so I really only buy WD there, too.

@tn5421 @fribbledom Yes, I am a huge WD fan myself, their red blue black and gold lines are excellent. For that box of 20, I happened to go with Seagate Exos Enterprise drives for the first time ever for me.Their performance is pretty comparable to WD golds from my benchmarks. They have only been spinning since Nov. 2019 though, so can't yet say for longevity.
