I've updated my Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to include a relatively little-known Mastodon feature that nonetheless is causing some big anxiety this week."So if I lock my account, only approved people can see my posts?", wherein I explain locked accounts and - here's the anxiety-inducing part - the RSS feed that *every* Mastodon account creates.https://github.com/joyeusenoelle/GuideToMastodon/#so-if-i-lock-my-account-only-approved-people-can-see-my-posts

@noelle do you know the rationale for having a RSS feed in the first place? it feels redundant and I don't remember RSS being mentioned in the activitypub spec at all

@emptyfortress @noelle because RSS is a common protocol and if Mastodon didn't support it there would be many feature requests for it.

@mewmew @noelle thanks, so it's not part of the mastodon machinery then? users should be able to opt out imo

@emptyfortress @noelle I don't think the limited use-case of opting-out is worth the added complexity of another feature and inconsistency between accounts.
