I've recently been taking a look at the source code for some emails in my inbox (why? …good question), and I've noticed that Outlook likes to send the text/plain portion of their emails with a base64 encoding, but basically no one else does.Any idea why Outlook would do that?Relatedly, what are your thoughts on disclosing your user agent in the email header?

@codesections embrace extend extinguish?Maybe it's just to avoid accidentally interpreting it as HTML?

@codesections > Any idea why Outlook would do that?Alternative to quoted-printable, I think? Historically, sending more than 7 bits would cause compat issues.Outlook also has some really odd formats like TNEF rather than MIME.> Relatedly, what are your thoughts on disclosing your user agent in the email header?Well, at least we don’t have browser-like agent sniffing in e-mail. (That I know of.)

@nothingplanet >> Any idea why Outlook [sends plaintext emails encoded in base64]?> Base64 is probably due to this: https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc1341/5_Content-Transfer-Encoding.htmlHmm? I understand why they are *allowed* to use base64. I just don't understand why they would *want* to. Unless I'm missing something, the standard you linked to is just answering the first question, and not the second.

@codesections I can't think of any good reason to do so. Who needs that information in an email? And it's a good rule of thumb to never volunteer information about your identity unless it serves a clear purpose.

@codesections outlook is completely broken, does all kind of crap instead of email. Do not try to understand it, it is a b2b thing, like: only outlook might be able to decipher the crap, so you shall also use it and not complain. I have to work with it and they did not implement mail abd never will. Reason for the weird behaviour might be the completely brojen encoding issues or simply ignorance of RFCs.
