I repeat: Contrary to Popular Belief, Fingerprints are thousands of times less secure than Passwords. Password Hacks can be detected and you can change it once Hacked. But Fingerprints...?https://libranet.de/display/52acf9cd-49b326cdeff537ef-36d55004

@clacke something i always wonder about is that in some cases where higher security standards SHOULD be used, they counterintuitively choose to use fingerprint-based authentication even though it has been proven a thousand times as insecure. One such example is in banks. This makes absolutely no sense to me and really bothers me a lot every time I think about it.

@clacke @jairajp Biometric authentication in general is ... pretty stupid. I still like it for things like my phone though, because it's just so conveient.

@clacke @jairajp I mean, it depends on whether or not there is an instance to verify whether one is really inputting their own fingerprint, doesn't it? Logically, automated systems (like phones) cannot do that.

@clacke @jairajp The Chinese companies, who make the various fingerprint reader devices (particularly for smartdoors, time clock at work etc) even warn installers/prospective purchases that there are various grades of the algorithm used (some more secure than others) and even then its not 100% reliable and should be backed up with other forms of physical security and ID verification..

@clacke @jairajp I have a fun complication to this problem! I don’t have fingerprints, because of contact dermatitis. And if I’m having any episode, what few ridges I do have change. These sorts of fingerprint scans fail on me. And yes, it’s caused problems. When I was once fingerprinted, the cop looked at the paper and then at me and said: “don’t commit any crimes.” Cause they were solid black!
