Welcome to my first #PeerTube exclusive video. Today I chat about what I aim to achieve with this channel as well as share some rambling thoughts on the #Fediverse and distributed technologies as a whole.

@chriswere Thanks for the video! As a viewer, I would love to know more about fediverse! What systems are there besides Mastodon and Peertube? How does ActivityPub work? Who are the people running the servers? What motivates them? How much work is it? Are there projects that are only starting? What does the future look like?

Regarding Individuous, it's also quite difficult to maintain, as Youtube keeps tracking and blocking Individuous IPs. My opinion on it is that it's an interesting workaround, but does not fix the main issue of a centralised, corporation-earned platform. So I would rather try to request permission to import a Youtube video that I particularly enjoyed to Peertube, keeping all the info about the original Youtube channel, and even possibly the donation links (!)I like how you described your experience of the Fediverse, and could relate a lot to what you said. If I could add something: it would be great if you could put some links in the description of the video about the technologies that you talked about (delta chat, autocrypt, individuous, etc..), and you should also use tags to make it searchable. Thank you for contributing to diversify the fediverse!

@anton @chriswere There are a lot of other projects. How it works can be really complicated to explain though, depending how much you want to get into technical details. In my experience, most admins and devs do this because they really want to help other people.https://github.com/BasixKOR/awesome-activitypub

@chriswere Great video, thanks. In the beginning when you were talking about how the Fediverse doesn't need to "beat" the existing networks, I couldn't help but think about my own feelings regarding (mia kara lingvo) #Esperanto... It doesn't matter if it's not everyone's second language, there's enough of us around that we can have fun, it's interesting and productive for us. And if anyone new wants to join us, good. If not, that's good too, and is completely up to them ๐

What a weird internet trip I had today. After discovering peertube through a "Google Keep alternatives" toot on Mastodon I found instances featuring controversial and lifehackish videos just to finally come back to the comfy nerdy side of the internet ๐.But the result is you've gained a subscriber. Looking forward to your uploads.I like your value argument. That a platform doesn't need to be big and only provide value. Thank you, even on YouTube I much prefer niche small channels over big ones. Let them do their thing.

@chriswere Oi! I watched it after some time. I liked it! Regarding the Invidious thing, I must say my workflow is even worse in terms of providing "support" (i.e. publicly shown views). Not only I use (Tor enabled) Invidious via Invidition to get "clean" links, but I also download most videos via youtube-dl (via Tor) to watch them offline whenever I can, heaping them on VLC playlists...๐คทโโ๏ธIt's really sad that so many great communicators (hate the "content" term) depend on such an evil platform.

BitTube.tv has put up a peertube node bittube.video, so soon hopefully we will be able to earn private crypto through their airtime model while using decentralized tech.

I think the fediverse does fit more of a niche for people than anything. Its more of a community thing, and figuring out what people you want to be around/talk to. It is a nice place once you get used to it. Although it works similar to twitter, I do agree that it is not really a fair comparison.

@chriswere I have been flicking through a lot of fediverse based chat and video sites since I work at sea, and most of the big platforms are blocked. Also I've been using Linux Mint so I'm in control of my updates. So far I've kept my bandwidth low so the office dont start banning all my tech fix websites. Even to go so far as to use IRC for news feeds until they blocked the port ๐ I was wondering if you know of some yesteryear based (dialup speed 56k) tech I should be looking into. Cheers
