Here's the thing: the U.S. imperialist government has been notoriously adept at forcing foreign businesses without any U.S. physical presence to comply with U.S. laws.So Graham and Blumenthal need to ask themselves what would stop China and Russia from demanding the same of U.S.-based companies to censor and surveille U.S.-based users according to their repressive laws?

Not least to mention compromised encryption will not only be a boon to American police state apparatus but also to every imaginable foreign actor, including terrorist organizations and organized criminal syndicates, in addition to China, DPRK, Russia, Iran, etc.

@salixlucida "Moreover, the U.S. attorney general would have the power to unilaterally overrule the commission’s rulings at any time and substitute their preferred list."<Insert that comic form the new yorker about the guy stating that the piolits have lost touch with the regular people and that he should fly the plane. Because you know fuck experts. I would do it myself, but media issues>

@salixlucida While I heavily doubt American companies who stand to lose a ton of money if their company secrets leak due to lack of high grade, non-backdoored encryption would allow this, and think they would send a gigantic army of lawyers and lobbyists, I'll keep an eye on this.

@salixlucida Meanwhile, unbreakable encryption already exists and is freely available and criminals and terrorists really don't give a shit about the law. Also, you'd think with it'd be particularly worrying to the US what with the reliance on contractors in the defense industry. It's been a problem. Chain's only strongest as the weakest link--if you're not going to do *absolutely everything* in-house, it stands to reason that you really need the average citizen's security to be good.

@salixlucida He's a categorical moral event horizon. A gutless today who will e remembered as a turd in a dull gray suit.
