@5minsaloneokAt first you should check if your laptop supports GNU/Linux( Bc Laptops which are specifically built to run Windows may not always be compatible) by running preferably Linux Mint in Live ISO mode, that way you'll be sure your laptop supports GNU/Linux. It is not hard, Just a littile learning curve simmilar to every new thing. If you are eager to learn, you'll be comfortable with it within a month. Now there are many tutorials( - 1/2

And fediverse will also be eager to help.Linux Mint is a very user friendly GNU/Linux distribution. @5minsaloneokGenerally when buying laptops you search online with Laptop's model number if the hardware supports GNU/Linux. And I also don't think DOS is related with compatibility. But @selea has been using GNU/Linux for more than 20 years now, he will be able to give you an expert opinion.

@5minsaloneok All you'd need is a USB with a Live/Installation disk. Making one is quite easy. You download the ISO and use a software like Rufus (this is documented on ubuntu.com). @redstarfish

@5minsaloneokYes, people become tempted to say that GNU/Linux works on everything, and almost 98% of the time it really does(e.g, distros like Ubuntu and Mint). But testing it for a specific hardware is the right thing to do. @viv

@5minsaloneok Well, I have only bought a brand new laptop once in my life, and back then I just smashed Ubuntu on it. I did not do any research about how it worked with GNU/Linux.But @redstarfish is correct, usually it is only just to do some research of a particular model if there is any quirks. But I know that Thinkpads just works

@5minsaloneokIt's not really GNU/Linux's fault that we face these hussles. Micro$oft is like the Modi Govt., it has been campaigning against GNU/Linux(Free Software Movement) for decades. It bribes news papers and news portals, Forces Hardware manufacturers not to make Hardware pre installed with GNU/Linux, It spread lies and propaganda against it, pressurizes govt., and uses all kinds of dirty tricks in the book. Freedom is not easy, Micro$oft makes it even harder to get Software freedom.

@redstarfishMaybe true, but the linux world itself is so fragmented and complex, even if Microsoft were to do nothing, people would still deterGuess linux needs to simplify for not that tech-savvy folks

@5minsaloneokI can understand how you feel. For example you made a distribution but I don't agree with your dicisions, So I have the right to modify and make my own distribution. On the basis of this principle there more 100 distributions out there. Each have its specific specialities and weaknesses. It can be a littile intimidting at first. But almost everyone agree that beginners should start with Linux mint or Ubuntu. Here watch this - 1/2
