@jwildeboerIt's going to be interesting seeing the spread. At least you have the surgical masks. Debating if I should get some. Although I'll need to pick up some in Paris if I do. I did manage to avoid the cold last year. 🤔

@onepict @jwildeboer Surgical masks protect you from sneezing at others. To actually protect yourself from breathing in virus particles, you want a class FFP2 mask. It's called a "disposable respirator", but doesn't have to have a valve and a hard plastic frame and stuff, there are models that are still a paper thing, just thicker material and tighter to the face than a surgical mask. They go for about 1 USD.

@clacke @onepict @jwildeboer how can it possibly work if you still have to breathe in air, how can paper filter out a virus

@clacke I bought surgical facemasks to emulate Eastern culture when dealing with illness as well as cleaning places with heavy spore buildup. I don't get ill often (up to twice per year) so I left them with my GF and forgot about them. At least one of us will survive the outbreak. :P@onepict @jwildeboer

@augustusI think it's the idea of filtering out the droplets. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/wuhan-virus-how-to-keep-safe-and-calm-this-chinese-new-year. The straits times article has a link to the other article I read about the masks. Hand sanitiser also makes sense. @clacke @jwildeboer

@thatbricksterIt's a very polite thing to do in Japan I noticed for good reasons. I wonder how much jetlag is going to play into this as well. As it could mask symptoms. I'm going to grab some hand sanitiser at the very least. I don't use public transport alot as I work from home. So only potential risk points are the trains when travelling to where I'm doing a talk. @clacke @jwildeboer

@onepict I carry hand sanitiser and tissues in my bag. It comes in very useful in this cold weather. I don't tend to use public transport either as I have an e-bike. I rarely use the train but hope to go to some faraway places in England or Europe this year.I once had to explain to a co-worker that the masks weren't because our air was dirty but to reduce spreading infection. I've never seen him change his tune so quickly.@clacke @jwildeboer

@onepict @augustus @jwildeboer That makes some sense if people are sneezing right at you, but in the discussions I heard, the medical people said meh, in that case they will have sneezed in your eyes too anyway. If Singaporean authorities are saying they're better than nothing, I'll reevaluate it. They could be viewing it as normalizing mask use in general, so that people with actual symptoms won't say "bah, it's nothing, I don't need a mask".

@clackeI used the FFP2 I think in Canberra to block the smoke 2 weeks ago. Although not everyone was using them. They were easily available in Chemist's. @jwildeboer

@augustus Viruses are not gases and not atomic in size. It is perfectly possible to have a paper filter that lets through oxygen and not viruses, but the better it filters, the harder it is to breathe through.Viruses have different sizes. Some require an FFP3 mask to stay out, but for Coronavirus FFP2 is said to be good enough.@onepict @jwildeboer

@clackeAlthough this is the article I read about the masks https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/public-should-use-surgical-masks-not-n95-masks-to-guard-against-wuhan-virus-spread. I'm not sure of all the classifications on the masks. @jwildeboer
