Question: how do you keep up to date with news, consume news and fine new sources to follow?Specifically tech, as that’s what I’m interested in, but could be anything really.

@kev I used reddit to find sources to add to my RSS reader. I'd go to subreddits for topics I was interested in, check which posts I was interested in, and then add the site it was from to my RSS reader.

@kev Mostly RSS feeds accumulated over years and a dozen of podcasts. But, most importantly, a solid understanding and acceptance of the fact that you will never be able to keep up with everything.

@jordan31 @kev I mostly read popular computer news. I have bookmarks to the headline listings, look through these, and look at the articles with interesting headlines. As most of these are 'copies' of the real articles in blogs or specific websites, I look for links in these articles to get to 'the real stuff'.Also I look at forums which focus on my interests.Example of a popular magazine:https://www.zdnet.com/topic/security/

I assume everyone knows this one already, but I have found hackaday to be a wonderful resource for keeping up with tech news for many years. They have got a good mix of details about hobbyists' projects, reviews of new tech and sometimes in-depth tutorials. There is an RSS feed and also a bot here on the fediverse which posts all the blog entries hackaday@botsin.space @kev#hackaday #tech

@kev beside podcast mobile app, mainly through Feedly RSS reader, which I keep updated adding/removing feeds based on current interests. Then, either I read the items directly in app or I send the interesting links to Pocket mobile app (or use the browser extension if I'm at my laptop). Finally, I use p2k.co service to have a digest of unread Pocket articles delivered to my Kindle Oasis.I've been using this setup for long now and I'm quite satisfied with it.

@kev For my normal news, I watch the daily news from NOS (think Dutch BBC and it's pretty close).I also pay two organizations for opinion (www.decorrespondent.nl) and investigative journalism (www.ftm.nl). I recently discovered Bellingcat adds great depth to the existing landscape.I sometimes read the Economist for geopolitical, international, diplomatic stuff. For tech I follow a list of YouTubers (check LiveOverflow!), mostly RSS and sometimes El Reg and /.

@kev Years and years ago, I started consolidating RSS feeds into Google Reader. When it died, I moved into Feedly, and I've been there since. RSS feeds come and go depending on my interests, but I have between 50 and 100 different feeds (I think, there's a lot of them) that I browse through on a regular basis. I'd like to move away from Feedly to something more Libre, but so far I've been too lazy. Every now and again I'll research alternatives, but I have yet to actually make the move.

@kev, I use NewsBar as my RSS client. It’s an iOS app that keeps a backup of my feeds in iCloud, but I can easily export it into any other client. I might move to TinyTinyRSS, if/when I become a MetaARPA member on SDF (or I might just stick with local clients). As for discovery, anytime I come across an article in the fediverse, Hacker News, or Reddit, I take some time to check out the blog and subscribe if it seems worth it. I think I’m well over 100 feeds, but most of them are low volume.

@mike @kev I'm curious what sources people are using as well. I use reddit, hackernews, and a ton of slack channels (how I miss IRC).For RSS specifically, the folks at @Framasoft are doing great work creating and supporting opensource services/software.They have a hosted "Framanews", or you can download and host it yourself.https://framanews.org/https://framagit.org/framasoft/ttrss

@mike @kev In the same situation as Mike, used Feedly for a while but eventually ditched it as I exported all my feeds as OPML and imported them into Flym. It does exactly what I need it to do and not much else.Link to githb repo here: https://github.com/FredJul/Flym

@mike @kev I have TT-RSS running in a container on an old laptop that I use as a home server. I’ve been using Newsboat (terminal based reader) to connect to it which has a nice filtering system on it for article searches. I use WireGuard so I can reach the server from wherever while protecting it from unauthorized access. I’m just about to experiment with elfeed in emacs, which has similar functionality to Newsboat. You can connect to TT-RSS with it using a separate connector plugin, apparently.
