I think we need an "appropriate medicine" movement, or something along those lines. We're stuck with an increasingly ridiculous situation where culty herbal remedy yahoos are making insane claims about what essential oils can achieve when, let's be honest, there's only a few things their good for.But because of those quaks, anyone who actually knows medicine has to be on the defensive and constantly on edge about ANYTHING that's strays from the "Normal protocol" even though we're now starting to create super drug resistant bacteria from overuse of the wrong thing. What I'm saying is Vaccines for measles, herbal tea and honey for mild colds, COME ON people let's start getting this crap right.

@MrControll Some of this is related to what I like to call science abuse. For example: yes, studies have found that a chemical called circumin can destroy some types of cancer cell, and yes, circumin is found in turmeric. No, this does not mean that “turmeric cures cancer” and no, you cannot drink turmeric tea instead of taking a proper treatment.I think a lot of the qwakery happened because some people decided they didn’t trust medicine, for the same reasons people decided they don’t trust food additives. It usually boils down to “chemicals bad, natural things good.” Even though natural things are literally made of chemicals.Though I’m pretty sure it’s also related to the fact that medicines are so obnoxiously expensive in the US. In other countries, the qwak medicine actually costs more than a real treatment.

@InvaderXan@sunbeam.city @MrControll@sunbeam.city ........This reminds me painfully of my mother. "You have hypothyroidism? Don't take pills! Have you tried seaweed?""Have you tried meditating your lesions (from MS, in my brain) away?"(This one I walked into accidentally, because I told her I could feel where the biggest lesion is - not like pain or anything, it's just that the MRI showed it exactly where I pictured myself losing thoughts)

@aldersprig @MrControll Yeah, there’s a lot of that Positive Energy™ and Mind Over Matter™ nonsense tied up in there, sadly. I get that the intentions may be good, but I don’t think people realise how harmful these attitudes can be. Interesting that the MRI confirmed what you’d found out yourself though.

@aldersprig @MrControll Oh totally, because it really is! A pity she grabbed the wrong end of the stick there. Crystals... I mean, they’re pretty I guess? So at least we have that.

@InvaderXan@sunbeam.city @MrControll@sunbeam.city They are definitely pretty! I have a Giant Chunk of Amethyst candleholder, that's nice. But I'm pretty sure that no amount of positive thinking is going to, you know, repair the literal holes* in my brain. * okay, they're not actually literally HOLES but it's how I think of them. @aldersprig There is one thing I sometimes wonder about...The placebo effect is actually a thing, and no one fully understands why. If someone expects a treatment to work, they get an improvement even if they're given something completely ineffective. It's a psychological effect on things like perception of pain or mood disorders.Obviously a placebo effect won't heal your brain, but I wonder how much these qwak medicines rely on that effect to keep people believing they're actually doing anything.

@InvaderXan @aldersprig It's fascinating. I once had to tell a coworker that homeopathy is BS. He told me that he swears it isn't. I asked him how he knew. He had surgery in India for his sinus issues. He went to a homeopathic doctor who, afterwards, prescribed him homeopathic medication and told him that he needed to take it for an entire year for it to work... He actually believed it...
