@starbreaker Hence all the work which has gone into providing easy ways to accompany audiovisual materials with descriptive text, et cetera, beginning with the "alt" element for images. But people still have to use them!

@starbreaker We've been doing more audio/video content at GEO because getting people to write articles about their co-op is much more difficult than getting people to talk about it for 30 minutes. We've also been wanting to have transcripts available for our A/V content, but we've discovered that even using the best tools available, creating a transcript is a helluva lot of work. As we're an almost entirely volunteer org, we haven't been able to figure out where to find that capacity.

@GuerillaOntologist I'll concede that audio/video is often easier to make because people are more likely to be comfortable talking in front of a mic/camera than they are sitting down and a keyboard and writing, but I'm talking about accessibility on the consumption side.As a sighted and highly literate person, I can read plain text quickly and easily. If I were blind but hearing, I could get the text fed through a screen reader. If I were blind and deaf, there are Braille displays.

@starbreaker Indeed. And there's the additional issue that it's impossible to search an audio recording for specific words (which is my big issue with A/V only content). I'm just pointing out that providing such requires a lot of time and many people/groups who have the ability to create A/V content don't have the wherewithal to provide a transcript as well. That isn't abelist, that's just the reality of trying to create content on a shoestring budget.

@GuerillaOntologist @starbreaker Honestly, there's relatively little that I prefer to encounter as audiovisual content, because I'm constrained to experience it in linear real time. I much prefer reading, where I can go at my own pace, & easily jump back to confirm that I'm getting it.
