@lwflouisa I'm really disappointed that #StarTrek #Discovery has gone for a lame 'AI-gone-rogue' plot in season 2. They were doing so well with the second season, it's sad to see them fall back on a tired cliche.

@strypey @lwflouisa But it's a time-travelling AI trying to alter the past to enable it to exist in the first place, that's NEVER been done before. Oh wait. But, to be fair, it hasn't been done in Trek before. And there it has been a long while since we've had an AI gone rogue plotline in Trek, the borg don't count obviously.

@quark @lwflouisa the #Borg totally count! AI-gone-rogue (plus #nanotech) is exactly what they are. Plus the #Species8472 plot arc from #Voyager was pretty much AI-gone-rogue too. So yes, it's been done in Trek before. Wait ... could we possible be witnessing the origins of the Borg? Will they somehow shoot any hardware (or wetware) infected with Control into deep space?

@quark AI-gone-rogue was already a tired, old trope when the Matrix movies did it, but at least they did something original with it. AI in the Matrix universe doesn't all converge into a single, misanthropic, homicidal hive mind until Smith, and it's defeated by surrender and co-existence, not destruction. Forgive me for wanting to see something new and ... maybe ... hopeful in my #SciFi. #Dystopia has become passe, unless it does something really original.@lwflouisa

@strypey @lwflouisa oh I agree, more innovative stories is better. I also love time travel but I'm sad it's an element of the series already since it's been done so much in Trek.

@strypey @lwflouisa And about the Borg I was just being pedantic for fun, but cyborgs and AI are distinct for me. The Borg made their choices as a collection of species to integrate with technology, but there is never a pure non-biological AI controlling them. And #Species8472 (oh, someday someone is going to find that tag in a search and get so excited) was fully biological and natural, the nanobots were not self-aware they were a designed weapon.

@quark > The Borg made their choices as a collection of species to integrate with technology, but there is never a pure non-biological AI controlling them. Sounds like you may be aware of a Borg origin storyline I'm not privy to? What you're describing sounds like the origin story of the #Cybermen in #DrWho, which the Borg were almost certainly inspired by.

@strypey No I don't have access to any insider information. But from the background we learn about the earlier eras of the Borg in the later Voyager seasons, my own personal head-cannon is that they formed became The Borg voluntarily, slowly at the beginning. And then The Collective went off in a way no one might have predicted. Also, I don't recall the #cybermen (which type though, at least three forms?) being created by an AI, maybe I'm missing some though.

@quark > the background we learn about the earlier eras of the Borg in the later Voyager seasonsAh, I don't think I've seen #Voyager beyond about season 4. #NZ TV controllers in the 90s had a bad habit of canning new scifi series well before the end of their run, even while endlessly rerunning the original ST, Lost in Space, etc. Been rewatching 90s ST and just got up to Voyager season 4.

@quark > I don't recall the #cybermen ... being created by an AINo. The back story I know is similar to what you describe of the origins of the Borg, voluntary adoption of cyborg enhancement with a hive mind emerging as an unintended consequence.

@strypey oh that's when it started getting good, once less leaves, 7 shows up and they start meeting 4h Borg rather then the Kazon it really matures as a series.

@quark something to look forward to when I get back from my southern summer in Aotearoa. The Kazon were a bit silly. I'm not missing them at all ;)
