You know how sometimes you waste time doing something you've been wanting to get to and go completely overboard....well, I finally created a website on github pages with jekyll to unify my intermittent desire to blog longer form about things. So I put up a post-game analysis for the current #Scowlathon polls. But tomorrow I'm going to do some proper work...honest.https://canadalek.github.io/quark.html

US Democratic Party hopeful Cory Booker is a Trekkie. And he has *opinions* about my people:https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/06/arts/television/cory-booker-star-trek.htmlQ: Is there a character in “Star Trek” that reminds you of Trump?Booker: [Pause] Wow. I mean, the first thing that popped in my mind, which I’d have to think about, just the Ferengi in general.Q: Quark? [The Ferengi bartender, mostly seen on the show “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Ferengis are known for the relentless pursuit of profit over all else.]

Booker: "I would definitely not say Quark because there was something about him — he showed some decency and kindness in many episodes. When you ask me about Trump, what comes more to mind, is just this idea that he is a throwback to a lot of the things that my father would say our species has got to evolve out of."#StarTrek

@strypey @lwflouisa But it's a time-travelling AI trying to alter the past to enable it to exist in the first place, that's NEVER been done before. Oh wait. But, to be fair, it hasn't been done in Trek before. And there it has been a long while since we've had an AI gone rogue plotline in Trek, the borg don't count obviously.

@strypey @lwflouisa oh I agree, more innovative stories is better. I also love time travel but I'm sad it's an element of the series already since it's been done so much in Trek.

@strypey @lwflouisa And about the Borg I was just being pedantic for fun, but cyborgs and AI are distinct for me. The Borg made their choices as a collection of species to integrate with technology, but there is never a pure non-biological AI controlling them. And #Species8472 (oh, someday someone is going to find that tag in a search and get so excited) was fully biological and natural, the nanobots were not self-aware they were a designed weapon.

@strypey No I don't have access to any insider information. But from the background we learn about the earlier eras of the Borg in the later Voyager seasons, my own personal head-cannon is that they formed became The Borg voluntarily, slowly at the beginning. And then The Collective went off in a way no one might have predicted. Also, I don't recall the #cybermen (which type though, at least three forms?) being created by an AI, maybe I'm missing some though.

@strypey oh that's when it started getting good, once less leaves, 7 shows up and they start meeting 4h Borg rather then the Kazon it really matures as a series.

I haven't heard anyone say this is Star Trek's take on Battlestar Galactica. So in won't say it either. But what I will do it rewatch Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I had totally forgotten how in love I was with Alison Pill (a.k.a The Drummer), and now she's a brilliant AI researcher.Also...his Romulan friend has an Irish accent am I right? Love it. Seems to me like all his friends and her parents know all about it, like their's a secret Data's Army protecting her.

I swear to the great gluttnous Guiding Hand Himself, this is my only place of peace on the internet. I keep reading news and Twitter and come away more depressed. But here I feel there is less depravity in some way. Ok, what the hell, one free glass of Romulan Ale on the house for all.Speaking of our shifty, green blooded neighbors. How does everyone else feel about their portrayal so far in Picard? I love the deep side stories about the Tal Shiar and the fighting nuns.

@djsumdog sorry I could have out that in CW, but I think mine was vague enough about the whole series.I love the acting, esp Raffi and Rios. I love voyager in the later years so the whole 7 of 9 thing is epic for me. And I think ST always has some silly, this one is really quite serious. The fact they are showing drug addiction and picard failing is deep for ST. Also, even if you dont like Disco, they wouldn't have been able to do this show without it. They can swear now!

@Ricardus @jshmlr It's still a great sign though that they're confident enough about the show to try to get people hooked on the main network. I hope it goes all on there eventually but I guess they need to make their profit somehow.

It's bots all the way down. An ancient Ferengi legend says that every user is is just a bot create for the First User to talk to. Then those bots created other bots to talk to and on and on. Some believe that in the end there is only one real user in the entire Fediverse, with multiple accounts talking to themself or bots descended from the ones they created talking to each other. --- #Rule128 ---
