When replying to emails, should your reply be on top of the quote or underneath it?

@amolithA: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation.Q: Why is top posting frowned upon?

@amolith keep the paradigm of whatever your audience is.When I'm responding to a post on a mailing list, I bottom-post because that's expected there. When I reply to an email thread at work, I top-post there because that's how my coworkers expect to see it.Inflexible ideologies are problematic.

@flab I use bottom posting and plaintext by default for all my "normal" accounts. For school and work, I top post and use HTML. I'm asking because I want sane defaults for my Roundcube instance and, while I'll definitely have normal people using it, I anticipate many of my users being more technically inclined and will appreciate defaults that work for them.

@amolith totally reasonable, except the HTML part. I still default to plaintext email for work. I have a T-Bird addon with a button to quickly toggle plaintext and HTML views for email I'm reading, but I always send plaintext.

@flab Do they ever mention it being weird that you use plaintext? Wrapping the lines at 72 chars really put me off when I enabled plaintext in Thunderbird, sent an email to my boss, then looked at it on my phone. Reading that in K9 was terrible

@amolith I don't actually wrap for work emails. I know I'm supposed to, but... well I'm not above compromise :)Some people have remarked that I attach things instead of 'embedding' them, or that I typed a numbered list by hand, but that's it.

@amolith @flab theres an option to soft-wrap plain text. people dont typically pay attention to how plain your emails look though

@flab Regarding attachments, I've always done that. I can't stand image embeds when it takes up 90% of the screen and you have to scroll around to actually see the text.Do you wrap for emails to not-work people, as in with communication to more technical individuals?

@wowaname @amolith I do a lot of inline replying at work but I will still have a top line, with at least "See Below" or something similar.

@wowaname Until I read through that website again, I had forgotten that replying inline to specific portions was also acceptable. I'll probably do that more often now 😉 @flab

@flab @amolith i just assume gmail is competent enough to offset the quotes and highlight what i typed, like most clients do. my quotes are usually snipped enough that people see where i replied right away

@ITwrx @flab @amolith i would argue that not being able to find your reply would reinforce why people prefer top posting

@amolith I dare anyone who works in a large company that uses Outlook to try bottom replying to emails using just plain text.

@sir Haha I expected you would say that. You make strong arguments for bottom posting and I've made that along with plaintext composition default on my mail server :blobwink:

@amolith bottom or inline is correct, but nobody does it anymore so people will think you're weird if you do it.

@lain When I have time, I'm going to see how inline replies render in Gmail. Depending on its behaviour and depending on who I'm emailing, I'll either use inline or bottom replies. Inline would be preferable but I don't want the recipient to have to look around for it
