My 4-year old understands that something that is "more big" than something else is "bigger", something that is "more nice" is nicer, etc. but she wants to know why something that is "more good" isn't "gooder"?Any ideas?

"Imagine a future in which the best way to learn how to do something -- how to write prose, how to solve differential equations, how to fly a plane -- is to download software, not unlike today's chess engines, that takes you from zero to sixty by way of a delightfully addictive inductive chain."If the idea sounds far-fetched, consider that I was taught to program by a program whose programmer, more than twenty-five years earlier, was taught to program by a program."https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/06/how-i-failed-failed-and-finally-succeeded-at-learning-how-to-code/239855/

I’m learning that I much prefer dumb technology such as old school thermostats over these idiotic “smart” devices such as our Nest thermostat. I can’t get the heat to come on despite it being 65 degrees F in the house. 😡

@trevdev I recently went through a similar exercise and while it’s not one of the options you’re considering, I’ve been spending a lot of time with #dlang and have really been enjoying it. The best way I can describe it is as a statically typed version of python. https://samirparikh.com/blog/adventures-in-dlang.html

@toast @trevdev I'm not a professional programmer and use programming just as a hobby to solve math puzzles and such but the challenges you mention are a common refrain in the mailing lists. I do have high hopes for D and really enjoy using it but hope they can resolve some of these issues.

@samir overall, it’s ok but so many minor things don’t work that the OS keeps getting in my way:- Safari constantly loads blank pages. Chrome(!) is now my default browser - selecting text to copy/paste is such a chore- Messages app keeps crashing when kids are recording Animoji’s to their grandparents - Mail does display some messages Have for the first time started thinking of jumping ship to a Linux-friendly phone after owning iPhones for almost 10 years

@hiway Care to document how you did that? I've been contemplating the idea of trying out Wireguard but most of the documentation I've found is Linux-focused. I'd like to start simple with just replacing an OpenVPN droplet I have at Digital Ocean

@codesections I’ve briefly played around with Matrix using the Riot web app on the desktop and one the phone. I think they are the most mainstream app. While I laud Matrix's intentions, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to remember all of the channels (Slack, IRC, Discourse, Telegram) that various communities hang out on. I’ve seen @raichoo toot about Matrix quite a bit. He seems to enjoy it.

You've got to really admire what the @elementary team is doing with the AppCenter. Being able to find and install software is just as important as what desktop you use. And being able to easily and directly contribute back to developers helps ensures that high quality software is readily available.

@art This is like the megapixel wars that camera manufacturers fought when digital cameras were still in their infancy. I suspect that the same thing will happen with TVs in that we'll settle down to an optimal range of resolution and then start competing on other features. Bring on 3D! 😉

@ethan @kev I created a very simple one using Inkscape. Not sure how much weight it adds to my site though. https://samirparikh.com/blog/create-favicon.html
