Would it be silly to try to find an mp3 player of the same kind as the first one I owned? Yes. Is that going to stop me? Maybe.

@ajroach42 My 1st was a Rio Karma in 2003. The original broke, but I was able to pick up another, which still sits on the box I use as a nightstand. I'm not sure if it even works anymore.

Mine was a Philips, I think? It was silver, it had a small monochrome screen with bright white letters. It did not have many buttons. I got it in 2005. IIRC, it had a very sleek, composed and design-y appearance. I don't remember the model, and I'm having a hard time finding anything that *feels* right online. I smashed it sometime in 2006. I still used it for another year or two until I managed to get the palm pilot set up like I wanted.

It was silver. It was kind of chunky. It had a small white on black screen. I don't remember the button configuration at all. I think it had 4GB of storage and an FM radio.

@ajroach42 hmm. While they were conveyed away from mp3 on device, it would be one of the last Sony MiniDisc players carried by Best Buy. Which I used for about a year after which I needed to reinstall Windows and discovered the software cd was missing which meant I couldn't conveniently use it without paying Sony to send a replacement cd. So instead of nearly $50 for said cd I bought a no name mp3 player from Costco, returned it, and got a Sansa mp3 player that I used for a few years.

@ajroach42 I probably would have kept using that minidisc player for years if Sony had simply put the software on their site to download (seriously, why go to such lengths to restrict access to the software when it's of no use unless they buy your hardware?). The little thing felt solidly built and I could operate the controls without looking at them. Then again the history of the minidisc can be accurately summed up as, "good tech hindered by Sony acting like Sony."

@LilFluff I mean... Yeah, that's Sony. Betamax would have beat VHS if the tapes had been larger. The PSP would have been a viable console if it had used a standard media format. Etc. etc. etc.

@ajroach42 Oh gosh, I can't recall the details at the moment but I can picture its cheap silver painted plastic housing and fake metal coated plastic buttons. You know the typical plastic electronics look of the late 90s that looks soooo bad compared to what we have now.
