Now that I am awake, let me once again wish everyone a good Stanislav Petrov Day. On which we remember that on this day in 1983 a Soviet soldier, at the cost of his job, exercised his common sense and prevented an accidental nuclear war.

@ajroach42 hmm. While they were conveyed away from mp3 on device, it would be one of the last Sony MiniDisc players carried by Best Buy. Which I used for about a year after which I needed to reinstall Windows and discovered the software cd was missing which meant I couldn't conveniently use it without paying Sony to send a replacement cd. So instead of nearly $50 for said cd I bought a no name mp3 player from Costco, returned it, and got a Sansa mp3 player that I used for a few years.

@ajroach42 I probably would have kept using that minidisc player for years if Sony had simply put the software on their site to download (seriously, why go to such lengths to restrict access to the software when it's of no use unless they buy your hardware?). The little thing felt solidly built and I could operate the controls without looking at them. Then again the history of the minidisc can be accurately summed up as, "good tech hindered by Sony acting like Sony."

As everyone knows there are two obvious ways to put together a simple CRUD (Create/Retrieve/Update/Delete) database app: curses based terminal TUI apps and interactive parser-based terminal apps. What do you mean those aren't-- GUIs? Web apps? *walks away muttering and shaking head*

Look, I like space exploration and electric cars, but when the guy heading up two companies aimed at those argues to a court, "Me? Potentially have to pay fines for libeling a guy by repeatedly calling him a pedophile in public? But *how*? I'd have to sell some of my stock to have cash and I don't wanna." Yeah, I may like electric cars and space but I don't think I can much like the guy.

@djsumdog 30% luck, 30% access to essentially free money (give me a $250K loan with no interest and no fixed due date for repayment and yeah, I bet you I can at least do an okay job getting something started), 30% good communications/persuasiveness, and maybe 10% applicable skill/knowledge.And I can respect the ones who acknowledge that and don't act like everyone should worship them.

@kemonine o.OO.oI don't know. That doesn't look very tail like. Tactical or otherwise. *now pondering just what a tactical tail would be, a tail with MOLLE webbing?*

@dick_turpin @stardot my first new computer (as opposed to family computer or passed down used computer) was a pentium 100 with six full megabytes of ram. Six! Later upgraded to eight.

@dick_turpin @stardot for a very short time I felt that way about the couple hundred megabyte hard drive on that p100. Then again I used a PC XT with a stock 10 meg disk until around 1994. It required twice weekly drive cleanings by the end to prevent crashing from filing the disk right down to the dreaded, "0 bytes free"

Yes, Daniel (protagonist of Drunk Muse) goes to class when he's feeling a touch off. His father is a firm believer in the, "Sick days are for losers," school of public health.

@thomasfuchs I will also be sure not to put that person in charge of maintaining any firearms I should ever be responsible for. Lubricating metallic items with basically saline solution? Do they lubricate their car with sand from beaches environmentalists want protected for endangered sea turtles?

@Elizafox iirc a relative in New Mexico said in the early 2000s folks got so annoyed by this (especially by shops scamming tourists) that the legislature passed a law saying that once you put up a going out of business sign your business license would automatically expire after 90 days
