Are there any LineageOS wizards out there? Trying to install TWRP on an old Samsung Galaxy S2 and nothing really sticks. Any pointers or knowledge about this old thing?

@ohyran you can actually put Replicant on there, instructions here: https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/RecoveryInstallationWithHeimdall

@ohyran Hi, I've done the whole thing with a S3.First you need the correct file of lineageos for your device if any is on the supported devices list from lineageos. This need to be flashed with TWRP if everything else is prepared. Try to find "flash Samsung S2 with TWRP" in the internet. You must have the right lineagros file for you Phone. For the S3 there were a few differentmodels.Good succes.

@HackWan the issue is TWRP tbh :) The last trick I heard was "at end of TWRP flashing, jank out battery to ensure it doesn't gets into bootloop" so its finicky :D

@ohyran @HackWan I always used the other one instead of twrp on my S2, seemed more stable. No idea what it was called. ClockworkMod rings a bell. 🤔

@ohyran Replicant is a LineageOS fork that actively supports the S2 and has a lot of S2 users.Id recommend using their TWRP-less instructions but with LineageOS images instead of their own.FYI though, Ive never tried it. Just what I might try.https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/RecoveryInstallationWithHeimdall

@ohyran Might also be a good idea to actually use their recovery instead of vanilla TWRP; if you know TWRP has issues with the S2. But im not sure either LineageOS or Replicant communities would support such a configuration.

@trashheap hmmm seems like they only allow the replicant ROM's that way and Replicant has no wifi and I plan using this phone as my banking device so Gapps or MicroG sadly is a must (because of stupid politicians and bank-ID apps, dont ask)BUT this is a good thing, its a baseline meaning I can play around with trying to force TWRP on there with confidence since theres a fallback - thanks to you and @Matter both <3

@ohyran I have unlocked and installed custom recoveries and lineage and other roms on a number of different phones but never a Galaxy SII. Where exactly are you getting stuck?

@kelbot oh its getting TWRP on there, using Heimdall to set it up works fine but its always refused to be able to stick and you can never get into the TWRP recovery screen. But got a bit with replicant now, so perhaps from there somehow :)

@ohyran Well this is quaint,I think trasheap has blocked me when the"alternative feminism" fediverse instance happened (forgot the name, you know the TERF one): I had never heard their arguments and was trying to understand what they were saying.About your toot:good luck for the banking stuff, it gets harder all the time...I hate banks and their stupid suits insisting to make things "secure" when really they take away our control and make everything break all the time(even for "normal" people)

@ohyran @kelbot I am a little confused what is happening – is the device crashing while booting into TWRP?

@ohyran @trashheap @Matter If you want to use microg, which should pass SafteyNet basic integrity checks, you should flash their Lineage build for ease of installation-- https://download.lineage.microg.org/i9100/

@utf8equalsX @kelbot yeah TWRP is the issue. Wont install properly. The best bet is according to some site to rip out the battery just to get it to shut down properly.

@ohyran @kelbot At what point in the process are you supposed to remove the power supply, according to this resource?

@utf8equalsX @kelbot Ok so the issue is this, after flashing it, there is no way to properly turn off download mode on the s2 - all it does is either reboot into the OS which breaks the flashing process, or if there is no OS, it goes into the stock repair mode thing (whatever thats called). So to shut it off - battery got to go (someone claimed that was what he/she did). But this whole thread has been pretty productive so now there is replicant on there, just need lineage sadly. @ohyran As I already said I think the microg lineage build should be sufficient

@utf8equalsX the issue is TWRP so not so much the actual ROM :)So far though replicant stuck, but as mentioned in other parts of this post - the replicant bit will only install their own ROM's and not Lineage variables. Which is why TWRP is the way to go it seems.

@ohyran And you got your TWRP from twrp.me? And maybe tried a different version? If you need to shut the device down after flashing, removing the battery sounds like good advice, doesn't it?

@utf8equalsX yeah yeah - its where I am in the process right now. Didn't work before but worth a shot now with the entire thread (pointer: there has been a lot of different threads under this post - so someone suggested the replicant OS thing, which worked which suggests the issue is that something was done in the wrong order before. Mastodon sucks for discussions tbh so all threads in it are kinda muddled)
